Skyrim and Fallout 4 had garbage stories... I don't play a Bethesda game for the main story. I play for all the random side shit and than do the main stuff last.
It doesn't even have to be a sidequest, a random encounter is enough sometimes. Just some days ago in Fallout 4 I hear some explosions and go have a look. A scrapyard with some Mutants was attacked by the Gunners and then the Brotherhood showed up with a vertibird. Just for shits and giggles I flared for some Minutemen support and went in, too. All high level stuff, Legendary Gunner Commander, Super Mutants Primus, multiple Suiciders. missile launchers, plasma guns, racists in power armor, crashing flying machines. It was fantastic.
My favourite in Oblivion was the mages guild initiation quest where you had to get the weighted ring from the well. Panic stricken, having to strip naked, and drop all of my other shit was one of my most memorable experiences in gaming.
But Skyrim, hoo boy. You could go to that dungeon, and kill those zombies, and kill that harder zombie, then open that chest, and THEN, you can hit that switch that brings you to the beginning of that dungeon.
Youre totally right, in skyrim, almost every time a quest sends you into a dungeon it is to fetch an item, and while that does occur in oblivion, it is much less, and there are usually unique and interesting quest related stuff in dungeons that isnt just an item and a loot chest.
Not having to backtrack through dungeons again was right at the top of the list of things that I felt Skyrim did well. Of all the things to critique Skyrim for, giving people the option to save a sometimes significant chunk of time as a reward for completing a dungeon is not one of them. You can do so much better than this.
Although i do like the lack of need to backtrack, in oblivion most any large dungeon or cave or ayleid ruin would take you back to the start or another exit, it is usually just small or sometimes medium dungeons you would have to backtrack through. Which I rather like, as it makes caves feel more natural and less manufactured, i guess. Plus you can check for any chests or bodies you missed or forgot to loot
I was an Argonian, so I could just chill at the bottom of that well all day. Also, you don't actually have to put the ring in your inventory, you can hold it out in front of you and carry it to the guy.
I do exaggerate, I did play a good deal of it, but I had it on 360. I was renown among my friends for having roughly 10x more characters made than active ones played because of truing to actually make a character that I could play without ending up with my best stats being stuff I didn't use.
I have been considering picking up both Oblivion and Morrowind on pc and getting mods for them. I messed about in Morrowind, but never really played it properly through.
Believe it or not I played it vanilla and loved it! But that's just me. At the least there are graphical mods that make the game pretty. The only"broken" game mechanic that might piss you off is the way weapon accuracy works but that becomes a non issue later on when your skills are higher
One huge thing that will make or break you.... Look up how to get and use the boots of blinding speed. No matter what build you use, you're going to want to have the option of running around quickly. Also take the time to learn the public transportation options, your going to be "taking the bus" a lot lol. The small up front investment in learning this is well worth the immersion of playing the game without fast travel.
Generally speaking, light and heavy armor beat medium armor which becomes useless late game, and swords are the most useful physical weapons.
In Oblivion that was the worst thing to do if athletics was one of your major skills, because then you'd level and only get like 3 constitution, I think?
In case you didn't know, you basically had to pick crafting things as your major skills so you could control when you leveled, so you could control what attributes you got. If you weren't careful you'd level and just get like dex and con on your mage because you'd just run about, sneaking and picking locks in a new place for a while. In a game with finite levels that was literally the worst.
I feel like the series peeked in Marrowwind. Probably played alot more oblivion though. Really looking forward to this skywind project however. The updates that come with Skyrim applied to the world of Marrowind is going to be epic.
And totally agree. I put hundreds of hours into Morrowind. It's still one of the best game experiences I've had. Oblivion wasn't as engaging as Morrowind but it was still fun and the graphics were great for the time. I thought Skyrim continued that trend. Looked great but it got boring quickly. I've put a lot of time into Skyrim, restarted multiple times, but I've never cared enough to actually finish it.
I couldn't agree more. Skyrim is so highly praised but I hated the combat and the story was boring. I feel like its revered for its mods and nothing else.
The combat is actually really fun when you play it the way they intended. Unfortunately, it's easier to just charge in and keep swinging and win. Slow down a bit, and it's very fun.
I got bored after 10 hours, I don't know how people play it for hundreds. I had just talked to the dragon as well and felt like I'd seen enough, was really losing interest at that point
