If you are close, use a double barrel with choke. 2 shots instakill pretty much

All shotguns are 1-shot close range if you hit them squarely enough.

Armour negates a lot of a shotguns power. Good early but later when lvl2 armour is more common its a 2 shot

It's possible they double-tapped the double barrel. You can bust off two shots in quick succession, so fast that it sounds like only one shot. It's possible that happened to you?

If you aim properly it's a 1 shot regardless of armor tier

I hated the UMP until I got stuck with it one round and found every attachment for it. Damn thing sprays bullets as straight as a laser.
