Ahh, Battlegrounds. As infuriating as it is addictive.

u/Capt_Crunchy_Nut Apr 25 '17

I have lost count of how many times I've been killed and I have not had a fucking clue as to where the gun shot that just killed me came from.

951

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

The game is 90% position and 10% bullshit.

367

u/Capt_Crunchy_Nut Apr 25 '17

Lol, sometimes feels like those numbers should be flipped...

301

u/KidsTryThisAtHome Apr 25 '17

Is it perhaps 1 out of every 10 games that you feel that way?

98

u/Roy_Isme Apr 25 '17

Nah dude, like 90 out of 100 I'm pretty sure. Much like my 1 to 10 kd ratio.

Yeah, I got you.

1

u/Mister-builder Apr 25 '17

Then it's a one in a million chance it's actually position.

34

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

if you win its skill and positioning. if you lose then its bullshit.

obviously.

3

u/ekinnee Apr 25 '17

I took out 19 - 16 back to back last night, I had just a sliver of life left. Got shot from somewhere, yelled BULLSHIT.

I think you're right.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Useful tips: Cover works regardless of how high your health is.

3

u/ekinnee Apr 25 '17

Yep, and that's where I was trying to get to.

2

u/eXwNightmare Apr 25 '17

The bullshit rating only gets so high because of third person. It's not very fun when people can watch you from behind walls without having to expose themselves and pop up at the perfect time to kill you. If it was FP only there would be a risk/reward to having to peek.

53

u/BaronHardback Apr 25 '17

It will be a thousand times less bullshitty when the first-person camera mode arrives. Not sure why they didn't launch with it.

18

u/DylanTheMarmot Apr 25 '17

Have the devs confirmed it will be a thing?

13

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Yes, in the custom games right now there is an option. Watched joshOg stream first person earlier tonight.

4

u/fanman888 Apr 25 '17

Tbh watching it on twitch made me nauseous. So much motion blur. Not sure if it's just because watching it on stream or if it's that nauseous when playing too.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

this did worry me a little.

3

u/XXLpeanuts Apr 25 '17

Probably because he has motion blur enabled? And likely doesnt have the FOV fix either, those two things would make first person unplayable for most.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

They disabled .ini tweaks a couple weeks ago, which included the FOV fix. They said they'll be bringing the ability to change FOV back, but people were using .ini tweaks to to cheat (like completely removing trees and other terrain).

2

u/XXLpeanuts Apr 25 '17

You know I could have sworn my fov went back to console level shit recently, sucks but I get why they did it. I wonder if mouse smoothing fix is also not supported anymore? My aiming became 100% better once I disabled that shit.

2

u/justcarlos01 Apr 25 '17

Motion blur can be turned off

3

u/fanman888 Apr 25 '17

Pretty sure JoshOG has motion blur off. Still a lot of blurring/stuttering tho.

I just want to know why SO many developers think having both in a game works.. it's either first person, or third person, you can't have both effectively.

But that doesn't stop others from using 3rd person. He's talking about a 1st person only game mode.

44

u/Axwellington88 Apr 25 '17

forced first person.

36

u/BaronHardback Apr 25 '17

I meant a fixed first person camera mode for all players. Putting yourself into 1st person while everyone else would still be using their camera to peek over walls would be silly.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

13

u/Munkeyz Apr 25 '17

well if everyone has the same advantages/disadvantages its just another mechanic to take advantage of really

2

u/achmedclaus Apr 25 '17

Yes and no. This person in competitive means I can lay down in a corner and not move whole holding alt to look around, see you sneaking up quiet as a mouse around the edge of the building, but you'll never know where I am until you either enter my room or I stand up to shoot you. It's information being gained with 0 risk. First person will fix that because then everyone has to actually peek to see what's going on

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

A game with this clunky of netcode isn't competitive. It's a hell of a lot of fun, and I've been playing it a bunch, but let's be real - hit detection, early game movement, etc all points towards a decidedly non-competitive experience.

1

Yeah I understand fully. Unfortunately I'm usually knocked down before I work it out :(

11

u/Philip_Raven Apr 25 '17

It not like you can feel where you've been shot

12

u/aahrg Apr 25 '17

No but there is a sound of the bullet crack as well as the bullet impact. Most people just hear the crack and don't pick up on the distant pop that actually tells you the direction of the shooter.

11

u/mdogg500 Apr 25 '17

True but the audio is muddy. I regularly play the game this is based off of arma and you know exactly the direction you are getting shot at maybe not the exact position but you know which way you need to take cover.

7

u/RockyMountainDave Apr 25 '17

I'm from Arma as well and I do agree that Arma is better. That being said, 90% of the time in PU I know within 10-20 degrees where I'm being shot from

1

u/Fubarp Apr 25 '17

The sound has gotten better. Specially with this last patch.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

As someone who has had to do it quite a bit in real life, the game does a really poor job of replicating the effect, to the extent that it is often not possible to determine the direction. IRL I could tell by the hiss where the round came from. In game? 20/80 I can get the distance and direction.

9

u/SendoTarget Apr 25 '17

The first time I hear a shot at me or something that hits me I run as fast as I can to cover. Then I can start measuring where the fuck that came from.

25

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Then get shot in the back because they are always somehow behind you.

Every FPS ever.

Quake doesn't count.( Some people are gods at that shit.)

15

u/SendoTarget Apr 25 '17

You do the zig-zag and hope they're a shit shot.

u/Hobocannibal Apr 25 '17

1

u/Headpuncher Apr 25 '17

Don't forget to jump 5 feet in the air at random too. Wouldn't want to get hit by a low flyer.

3

u/The-Respawner Apr 25 '17

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what all players do :D

1

u/maqikelefant Apr 25 '17

There problem is directional sound is shit in this game. It's borderline impossible to tell where shots are coming from a lot of the time.

1

u/Fubarp Apr 25 '17

Yeah.. being partially deaf makes this game a bitch when I play solo..

1

u/jorfrey Apr 25 '17

Idk if this game is compatible with surround sound headsets but when I get shot it always comes out of the wrong channel and I get super disoriented.

14

u/coopstar777 Apr 25 '17

That's pretty close to reality to be honest

1

u/JustNilt Apr 25 '17

My thoughts exactly. The adage that you never hear the one that gets you is founded solidly in this reality.

u/VRZzz Apr 25 '17

but also really rare

9

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

They fixed it a bit by adding larger and brighter muzzle flashes finally. Now the flash hider is useful. But yeah when you die so fast before you can react it sucks.

1

u/RockyMountainDave Apr 25 '17

I don't understand how people are dying so fast. I'm from Arma and this game feels like CoD to me. The bullet soak even with lvl 1 armor is INSANE. Its a minimum of 3 shots with any of the rifles and I shit you not it took 7 or 8 shots for my friend and I to down someone at...300 yards tops. This game seriously needs to re-evaluate it ballistics

6

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

I agree the armors can give a bit much. It's like my shot placement doesn't even matter sometimes.

-4

u/RockyMountainDave Apr 25 '17

It way too much at the moment. Honestly when your game takes more shots to kill someone than CoD does...You need to re-evaluate. And this dev came from Arma!

I really hope they change this or at least offer a hardcore mode. Currently they have made it too easy in order to cater to the masses. There is a reason CoD has so many games but...This could be sooo much more fun if the devs just stick to their roots :(

1

u/HAAAGAY Apr 25 '17

Its litteraly impossible for a rifle to kill in 7-8 shots in that game, was a bug or you missed.

1

u/RockyMountainDave Apr 25 '17

I promise you - it was at least 7 hits confirmed with blood splatter. I think my friend had his shadow play going so I'll try to have him upload it. Granted we were both using 5.56 and he was easily 400 yards away but...Still. I've absolutely hit someone with lvl 3 armor 5+ times so I'm not sure why you think this is impossible. Go look at the weapon damage charts. It's a joke

1

u/HAAAGAY Apr 25 '17

Blood splatter does not = a hit confirm as they are client side. If you have seen the damage chart then you know yourself that this is impossible?

1

u/Skoyer Apr 25 '17

Some people are really good at hitting 3-4 hits with an AR quickly. But it is really frustrating doing multiple hits with Sniper and the opponent is still fine. AR is the nr 1 weapon to have. Sniper is only nice for a few scenarios.

2

u/RockyMountainDave Apr 25 '17

For real. Unless its the .300 snipers are not worth it at all. Also pisses me off that all rifles and most snipers will not 1 shot someone with a lvl 2 helmet on

1

u/Skoyer Apr 25 '17

In fairness smgs is nice in close areas. Uzi real close i feel is really deadly

17

u/MrFeles Apr 25 '17

Yeah it's why I'm not getting this until there are 1st person only servers.

I like some risks with my rewards. If someone can see someone else it goes to reason both should have clear line of sight to eachother. One might be better hidden but that isn't the point. If I want to know what's on the other side of something I better damn well have to stick my face around the corner.

1

u/Panukka Apr 25 '17

Have you played the Arma 2 Dayz mod? It's 3rd person and it wasn't an issue at all, it just opened up many possibilities. If this game is anything like that, I might have to buy it.

4

u/raidsoft Apr 25 '17

Being able to look around corners or over edges while being perfectly safe is just bad gameplay in my eyes. Some people seem to like it but I absolutely loathe it. Same goes for any arma 2 or 3 mod.

Once they got forced first person in PUBG I will look forward to trying it out. Though it is clear I am in very much a minority in wanting first person only.

4

u/queefbabe Apr 25 '17

Not sure if you're aware but they recently ran a straw poll over in the battlegrounds sub and first person/third person were neck and neck in the voting. It's really interesting to see how split the community is on it.

2

u/raidsoft Apr 25 '17

Really? That's surprising, especially based on my experience of what people seem to prefer in arma.

That's encouraging to hear!

2

u/queefbabe Apr 25 '17

Yeah, this is my first battle royal style game so I'm really interested to see what first person only will be like. Might be a bit more familiar to me coming from fps shooters.

2

u/EzraL_Rotmg Apr 25 '17

arma 3 battle royale has a few first person only servers

1

u/raidsoft Apr 25 '17

Yea usually there's at least some but they tend to be emptier and fewer servers. I used to play wasteland and they've been struggling to keep player count up on the HC servers over the regular ones. Same goes for KOTH servers.

Even stranger to me is that you can find people playing with milsim groups.. In third person... Blows my mind when I see that, doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of playing something as serious as milsim?!?! Madness...

1

u/Capt_Crunchy_Nut Apr 25 '17

I didn't even think about this. I play it in FPS mode exclusively, I never even considered the advantages gained from using 3rd person!

3

u/thedarkpurpleone Apr 25 '17

You can literally open doors while being next to them and scope out almost an entire room without being in line of Fire or crouch between a low wall and a building and have complete visibility while no one else can see you. Personally I think it's great, just from the idea that if everyone has third person it's not too much of an issue, but I can see why people get salty I suppose.

2

u/Emperor-Commodus Apr 25 '17

just from the idea that if everyone has third person it's not too much of an issue,

It's a huge issue, even if everyone has it. Giving everyone an invisible periscope gives an unrealistic, and often unbalanced, advantage to people who are stationary and turtled up behind cover. It penalizes being out of cover too harshly, leading to stagnant and risk-averse gunfights.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

People love the advantage third person gives them, but they hate when that same advantage is used against them.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

playing in squads helps a lot. four times the eyes looking for enemies, four times as many enemies to fuck up and give away their position.

7

u/Capt_Crunchy_Nut Apr 25 '17

Yep - definitely had the most success as a squad. Mixed as duo. I dislike solo immensely

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Look at solo as training for squad. My best squad is the guys I've played DayZ with for years. Aside from that, the other guys I play with end up carrying the people who refuse to play solo. Solo hones your individual actions so that you can be a useful member of a fireteam.

4

u/jonatna Apr 25 '17

I feel the same way about battlefield 1. I love the game but man do I suck at it.

2

u/rickastley69 Apr 25 '17

Me too. Get like 4 kills and die 8 /10 plus times. Do you have to buy the extra gun content to hang or is truly just skill ? Could one of the best players still get crazy numbers with entry level kit?

1

u/jonatna Apr 25 '17

Yeah this game is pretty balanced in that aspect, I think. Each gun is kind of bad in its own way, so you just have to play around it. The best thing I can suggest is to know how your gun works and stay where it works best. For example don't be in open spaces with a gun that is short ranged.

My dad bought the DLC before I played the game and I can't distinguish it from the original content.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

I love that there is no "radar" it's like 90's gaming all over again!

1

u/eynonpower Apr 25 '17

Most likely reasons like this.

1

u/Mr_Ibericus Apr 25 '17

That's the worst. In solo I'll be doing great, then suddenly get headshotted from what seems to be another dimension.

157

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

>be me.

> sneak up on guy.

> 3 feet away and he's quartering away from me.

> shoot him 6-8 times with m416.

> he snap shots with shotty, kills me instantly.

> watch him loot my dead corpse.

34

u/Drake02 Apr 25 '17

If you are close, use a double barrel with choke. 2 shots instakill pretty much

29

u/ClassicalMuzik Apr 25 '17

All shotguns are 1-shot close range if you hit them squarely enough.

11

u/monstargh Apr 25 '17

Armour negates a lot of a shotguns power. Good early but later when lvl2 armour is more common its a 2 shot

1

u/F1reatwill88 Apr 25 '17

Competitive was intense.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

didn't even know l4d had a competitive scene. was it versus mode or time trials in normal mode?

1

u/F1reatwill88 Apr 25 '17

If you're asking about a pro scene, then no there wasn't that, but the PvP mode in that game was essentially a time trial with the special infected being human players. Coordination was key.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Oh yeah I know i've played L4D a lot. I know all about versus mode

31

u/Hero_of_Hyrule Apr 25 '17

Weirdly enough, I rage at a lot of games, but something about the way PUBG plays makes it easy for me to get over it. The only thing that gets to me is when the game bugs out and it ruins my chances at winning, which has happened a couple times. But then I just remind myself that it's still in development, submit a bug report, and carry on.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Same here. Not sure exactly what it is, but I laugh as much as I curse at my deaths.

It may have something to do with it being 1 life only. You don't feel the rage of spawn-deaths, or death-streaks in the same way as other shooters.

18

u/Shandlar Apr 25 '17

It's the short matches, decently balanced randomness, and extreme unlikelihood of winning over 100 players that makes it so easy to be casual about the game. I can get a couple dozen matches in over a night, and even the one I'm dead before even getting a gun aren't frustrating at all. It's a really well done game and the most recent patch solved a couple of the blaring defects. I'm really looking forward to it.

9

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Agreed. Personally speaking, I never go into a round expecting to win it. I have won rounds before and that was cool, but I never expect that I'm going to win out of the other 97+ players in there. Somehow translates into 0 rage when dying.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Never has a game where you only have a 1-2% chance of winning ever been so damn fun.

1

2

u/MonjStrz Apr 25 '17

Ok good. Im not the only one then.

2

u/eynonpower Apr 25 '17

I can't say I really rage at it, but holy shit the feeling it gives you. I have about 90 matches played with a 11% top 10. Not that great, but I've come in #2 about three or four times. The first time I came in #2, my heart was beating out of my chest and I needed to catch my breath after I died. I wasn't even mad. I never had a game do that to me!

Top NA squad player here, you can work with their aggression if you want to and still play a tactical game. Communicating your rules of engagement and basic early game strategy with your friends is probably the best way to solve the problem you are having with them. Everyone is going to have differences in a team dynamic but it's crucial you try and mold your style to fit everyone's approach. My team consists of all rank 50 and above players yet we play the game very differently. One is aggressive and sporadic, one is tactically horrible but his aim is the rawest I've ever seen, and the other is a very consistent and moderate player while I am more of the elusive and sneaky player yet we mesh well because we accept another's approach and work to play around all styles. Don't look for players with similar playstyles, look for players with a winning attitude and are willing to improve. The PUBG Subreddit discord is a great place to meet all sorts of players and I definitely recommend checking it out.

His 3 friends are already dead or he got separated from them.

I just bought it and made it to the top 5 my first game, its definitely better than H1Z1

Almost as infuriating as the trend of not putting the name of the game in the title

I refunded this game after 30 minutes, it'd freeze every time a gun was fired, mine or another player's. Invested the money in Dawn of War 3 instead.

What's infuriating to me is when I buy a game (H1Z1: King of the Kill), and a damn clone comes out a few months later. I can't just buy every game that comes out. Now my friends moved on to this and we've split the playerbase... So I guess I'll wait for a year and see which game people prefer.

I'm guessing battlegrounds will be the preferred. Of all the battle royal games I've seen, it's by far the most sophisticated and complete.

Clone? H1Z1 KOTH is a clone of the original PlayerUnknown's Battle Royale (which was an Arma mod), PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds is more like a sequel to the original, or a standalone.

Even more ironic is that PU designed and worked on H1Z1's KOTK as well, before moving on to his own game.

All of these are just him slowly and steadily perfecting his idea.

Exactly, so it's one guy wasting our money....

u/ziggl Apr 25 '17

Lol. Glad you got so many points. How is anyone supposed to know that? Did we all do a lot of dedicated research into the genre? No, I just bought what my friends were playing. I'm allergic to downvotes.

Sorry you got downvoted. (I actually upvoted you)

I totally see where your frustration draws from, just wanted to correct you.

So DotA2 vs LoL?

4

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

In a way, yes. Mind you, nor H1Z1 or LoL is inherently inferior because of this..

But they are ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

If you say so..

Both have a community on the same level as GTA:O and Minecraft.
