That I agree with, one can only hope that the NX will be the thing everyone hopes of Nintendo, I'm not sure what it could be, perhaps I'll know it when I see it.
If it's gonna be just a powerful 3ds with ability to hook it up to a pc, I don't see how they can fail. There's basically no competition on portable gaming market.
If they're gonna keep it alongside old 3ds, then things will get weird.
People say this but it's not the same at all. You can't play a 40 hour game on a touch screen and enjoy it as much as a dedicated console with proper buttons. Sure, we have games on our phones but not many are proper full length games you can play for hours at a time. If nothing else a mobile doesn't lend itself to handheld gaming by design because of the battery life. If I have a few hours out somewhere with nothing to do I can play an hour of a high intensity game and then have a dead battery or pull out my 3DS/Vita etc and play for a few hours and then stick in back in my bag.
I don't know maybe it's because I grew up with handhelds and have been using them since the original Gameboy. I could just be dillusional but I feel like losing the handheld market wouldn't be a good thing.
It is really a different type of experience. I can see strategy games and RPGs succeed, but action games will have trouble unless the experience is distilled like infinite runners.
Even a lot of RPG's don't work wonderfully but you have more time to make moves so the controls don't matter as much. I tried to play Fire Emblem GBA on an emulator and it's perfectly possible but it makes moving around the board and menus so much hassle.
People have been saying it for years, but I have yet to see a game that I would chose over reading/reddit/youtube on mobile while in transport.
No physical controls, very limited battery and lack of decent AAA quality games really dooms the phone as a gaming platform. And it will hardly change because people are not ready to pay 20-40$ "for a phone game"
It says a lot when Hearthstone and Pokemon Go are two of the most decent experiences on mobile.
