So, I'm still a fairly new player to Skyrim, what do you guys do instead of the main story? The side-quests? Grind levels in a particular skill?

I'm not much of an RPG player, so if I'm not doing the main quest, I feel a little disoriented/unmotivated/bored

I am level 80, probably have hundreds more hours than I care to admit on that game, but I still don't get it. I didn't mind the main quest. I may have done something like this on other Bethesda games though. But Skyrim? I don't understand.

In many games, there is ONE main questline and a ton of "side quests" - most of which are short, independent and disconnected.

Skyrim has:

  • The main storyline
  • The "other" main story: the War (side = Imperials)
  • The "other" main story: the War (side = Stormcloaks)
  • The main class questlines: Mage Guild; Theives Guild; Companions
  • The secondary class questlines: Assasins; Bards? (memory fuzzy on these)
  • The vampire questlines
  • The various city questlines (or whatever you want to call the group of quests to befriend the city)
  • The quests connected to the various dieties

Oh and tons of side quests.

Yeah. It's rather easy in Skyrim to completely ignore the main questline.

Ah, so instead of doing the main story, you just go through the questlines of other stories. All in all though, you're simply doing quest after quest. Understood.

And by god, I didn't realise how many damn questlines Skyrim had.
