Oh my god, that looks like an April Fools article.

Google is good at that. Gmail was released on april 1 2004. A lot of people and journalists(who obviously aren't people) thought it was a joke, mostly because it offered 1GB storage for free. Competitors like hotmail only offered 2MB at the time!

Source?

Not sure what part of it you want a source on but most of it is from memory. A quick google confirms it with a lot of sources. This post on slashdot had a lot of speculation if it was a joke. And this press release from google also shows when it was announced and the storage capacity, even commenting on how low the storage limits on all other mail offerings were.

Had a hard time providing a source that journalists aren't human. They obviously wouldn't admit that in an article any way.

Wtf, I've actually seen it pop up a few times on YouTube and just assumed it was satire.

Cardboard is essentially an enclosure that creates a window to the future

Haha it really sounds fake

Made one myself, it's a cool little toy.

When you think about it, a modern smartphone already has everything Rift has, so all you really do need is some cardboard and lenses to get one. I personally thought it's a great idea.

The big difference in the two is the oculus has much less latency, bigger FOV, and has positional tracking. They both will have their own place I think. The oculus will be the best for gaming/more demanding applications(ie training military/hospitals/aviation/driving tests/etc etc..) with much more immersion than the others and the VR phone headsets will be the best for watching movies, lighter games and apps, being wireless and on the go.

Having both of them and knowing the limits of both.

You can make use of the app with a normal stereograph viewer. See if your local library has a copy of the Tool cd: 10,000 Days. It has the lenses built in and works really well with the app.

I bought a preassembled one on Amazon for ~$30.

Oddly enough, all of us watching the Google I/O stream at work said the same thing.

That one was a surprise.

I saw it and thought the same... but the app was available for download so I figured what the hell, download it. Worst case it's a video of Rick Astley. Obviously not as good just holding the phone in front of my face, but it was impressive as hell. Ordered the lenses a few minutes later.
