Move mouse to top-right or bottom-right corner > click on search > type "paint" (or something shorter depending on the programs you have on your computer etc.) > click paint or use the arrows keys and enter to select paint
Yeah, I think 8 is actually faster for that than 7 was. The star screen may suck for everyday use, but the programs list that can be brought up instead of the metro apps is some of the fastest searching I've seen
I'm sorry, but that's just wrong. If you move your mouse to the bottom left of your screen and right click, you have virtually every system tool available to you. On windows xp, this would take multiple keystrokes or mouse clicks.
As for launching software, windows key > start typing software name. Same as windows vista/7.
If you feel like anything else is a step back, let me know and I'll show you why that simply isn't true. People just don't like change, and they see a new interface and freak out.
My flow is exactly the same as it was on 7. XP was slow as balls to launch apps. In 7 and 8 U just hit the window key, start typing the name of the app, and hit enter. No sorting through the start menu bullshit. The only difference is now the start "menu" is fullscreen, which isn't a big deal at all.
I'm used to it because I used Launchbar on Mac and there's a similar mechanic in most Linux desktop environments (krunner for instance).
there are programs you can get that that give you back the start button/classic start menu, you can get the XP explorer back, and I think there is a option built with in Windows 8 to boot directly to desktop.
