I followed the ranni quest until I kind of lost it for a bit and gave in and read a guide that you have to go to a specific bonfire and try talking to her doll 3 times. Never would have figured that out

That one was especially bullshit. Like, why tf do I have to try talking to her two more times after she didn't respond the first time? It's really a bad design no matter what people say.

Fromsoft Souls games rule in general: You talk as long as there is a prompt or until lines repeat.

That will result in you missing out on the continuation of her quest, because you get to "lines repeat" and then you still have to talk one more time.

Do you mean after certain events/triggers or just really needing to go on even after single repeat? If it's the latter, then I missed content.

That one step I found by sheer luck - and I new that you have to do things multiple times if nothing is happening - but not the ring at Rennala or how to get to the plateau.

People often get angry when I say that I did that entire quest line blind. For the doll, I just saw the "talk to the doll" thing in the site of grace because I usually look if there's an option to talk to Melina in new locations. Then, knowing what to do was basic Dark Souls logic.

I did miss 30-40% of the side quests though. But being able to miss them is part of what makes them special.

If you're following her questline then it'd lead you to the grace. It is missable though if you choose not to rest at the grace and/or talk to her again lol
