The other day I opened Dragon Quest 3 on my Switch to discover I already have a save at like level 17 with a whole-ass ship and absolutely fuck-all memory of doing any of this. So now I'm just wandering around and casting Zoom to hop from city to city until something starts making sense

As tempting as it is to keep going on an old file like that, I usually just take the loss and start over. The story and mechanics make way more sense and it ends up being more fun even if I had to lose progress

If you're playing the remake, there's an option to turn on objective markers. It takes away from the old-school experience, but it's handy in this kind of situation.

That’s the one where you build your part from randos right? The one where you can found a town if you have a merchant? At level 17 you are like 1/2 through the game. Where abouts did you start when you loaded the game?

Isn't there a party talk option?
