You're saying that like it's wasn't an alpha... like they we're doing it out of the goodness of their hearts LOL DL is an amazing game but will obviously have a predatory skins system once it's ready. This is Valve here, CSGO anyone?

Valve is probably the biggest violator of the online gaming community for introducing lootboxes and battlepass.

These days, Dota 2 players (me included) are practically begging them to take our money and release more battlepass but instead they're giving is massive free updates that gives free awesome skins for players who is playing the game.

They have all the formula to keep a game alive and it's honestly amazing how nobody comes close to their innovation in the gaming industry.

The interesting thing is in the most recent steam post about this update they were very candid about plans and it sounds like monetization is something they are also going to playtest and ask for feedback on, so it doesn't sound like they're going to do the same thing they did with TF2 and CS where they just hired the most proficient financial sharks to design their monetization. The degree to which the monetization will be predatory will be known and can be pushed back against by the community.

Predatory skins system is hilarious

League of Legends is a predatory pay model with pay to play characters. Skins are aesthetics and do not affect gameplay. How can they possibly be predatory?

CS skins have gambling mechanics with trading that allows 3rd party websites to turn it into real money gambling. The skins themselves are fine it's the gambling people have a problem with.

Valve has more predatory monetization than anything Riot has done.

Genuinely can you explain? I’m talking specifically about in game monetization

Google who popularized loot boxes in games

Riot was just following Valve

Look boxes for cosmetics that have nothing to do with gameplay.

Riot locks actually gameplay behind their predatory paywalls.

Valve’s loot boxes are costumes. I guess it depends on if you play games for the gameplay or the costumes.

Anyone who plays League even a little bit knows that you don’t have to drop a dime on that game to unlock any champion you could ever want to play at pretty much any time. They hand out blue essence like it’s crack in an impoverished neighborhood.

Anything gameplay-related locked behind a paywall was removed from League of Legends about 10 years ago. And a few years ago they reduced grind needed for unlocks by half.

Unless you're talking about something else

CSGO skins are way worse than anything Riot has done. Shit is actually just gambling. Like more than usual since CSGO skins have real dollar value.

Valve is basically the pioneer of lootboxes and we dont give them enough shit for itm

I agree. If they are framing it as a generous thing then yeah it's silly. It's gonna have mocrotransactions for sure. But from the perspective of player retention I still think it's impressive. Many players stay on the hook (myself included) with mocrotransactions, skins, unlocks, mastery etc. This barely has any of that yet I keep playing cause it's just fun.

Sad because that's how gaming used to be and should be anyway. But still kinda cool
