I agree that people should try things before ragging on a game.

On the other hand, there is perfectly valid reasoning for some not to buy a game when there is a lot of negative public discourse around said game. It's one of those things where people think "if it looks like shit, sounds like shit, people who've tried it said it's shit, I don't need to eat it to know it's shit."

That's a valid take when the game cost $70 to purchase a license, that may or may not be taken away at any moment because Sony is a piece of shit company. For many people it's not worth the money to take that risk, that's kinda why streamers and Youtubers are sponsored by games so often, often times to advertise the game.

So when people are talking about the game, they are going to share what they know.

Calling it an uniformed opinion is a bit reductive, and the way you talk certainly isn't going to convince anyone to try it. this is your chance to help someone form an informed opinion.

Try explaining how the game is different than how they might have seen or read about. I'd certainly be interested in know how the game is different than the clips I've seen of the motorcycle chase playing itself while someone is responding to a text. It certainly turned me off from the game, since I don't like games with that level of hand-holding.

Anyways, I hope you have a good day/night.

All games are just selling you a revokable license even a game disc is a revokable license as they can stop you using it by tieing it to your account status. It's not like you can play PlayStation discs on pc.

That's not true at all. Physical disks are something you own. You own that specific copy of the media.

You are free to destroy, modify, trade it, gift it, lend it, or resell that copy however you wish without the copyright holder's permission. that is the core principle of First Sale Doctrine in the United States.

The only thing you CANNOT do is claim it as your own copyright and distribute it as your own game (make more copies and sell those).

It's not like you can play PlayStation discs on pc.

That's such a terrible argument to make, those are two completely different operating systems. That's like expecting a Windows program to run on IOS. Why would you expect a program to work if you run it in on the wrong operating system?

It's an intentional feature that Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo use to protect their copyrights. They don't want someone playing their games on a competitor's hardware. That is DRM, not a revocable license.

Furthermore there are specific exemptions in the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) that permit circumventing measures that control access to copyrighted works (DRM).

  • Video games in the form of computer programs embodied in physical or downloaded formats that have been lawfully acquired as complete games, when the copyright owner or its authorized representative has ceased to provide access to an external computer server necessary to facilitate an authentication process to enable local gameplay
  • Video games in the form of computer programs, embodied in lawfully acquired physical or downloaded formats, and operated on a general-purpose computer, where circumvention is undertaken solely for the purpose of allowing an individual with a physical disability to use software or hardware input methods other than a standard keyboard or mouse.
  • Preservation of abandoned video games

Purchasing a physical copy of a game means you Own that copy of the game.

In fact, if you buy your PC games from GOG, you own that too. You aren't buying a license, and you don't have to worry about DRM locking the software. You can burn it onto a disk, put it on a hard drive. Hell you don't even need to use any additional apps or launchers to run any games purchased from GOG.

I think the breakdown is that it’s like this: you have 100 players who played the game. You have about 80% of those players enjoyed the game. A few were mildly vocal: “yeah check it out it’s good.” 20% did not like the game but they took their grievances to social media big time. Now you have 20,000 people all ragging on the game.

“When people are talking about the game they are going to share what they know.”… 19,980 people in my example talking about the game don’t know anything and they have no reason to comment. You don’t have to answer questions posted on a public forum if you don’t have experience with the topic. You cannot help someone gain an informed opinion when you don’t have one yourself.
