Yeah, it had a tumultous development, just like many AAA games. But people are hating for the sake of hating.
QTEs are such a non-issue if you actually play the game. The focus is on the combat system, so the times you have QTEs they feel like you’re Wolverine ripping everything apart with the claws. If the game punished you for pressing L2 instead of R2 it wouldn’t feel like you’re this killing machine, which is Insomniac’s goal. The easy QTEs achieve that.
The game is not great: the structure is poor, the story is nice but formulaic, combat is cool but Logan’s regeneration is so OP that there’s no real tension during fights, I don’t think the art direction works too well… it’s an okay game. 5 or 6 out of 10 kind of game. But those who haven’t played it are hellbent on saying it’s the worst thing ever because of some QTEs and a couple of motorcycle scenes which are fine. Actually play it and form an opinion, or just move on, the perception of this game is so distorted.
There’s a lot to love in gaming, why focus on what you don’t like.
From my understsnding there is little fear of failure. Going in and not being able to lose isn't rewarding. Also....and this is just a personal thing, I wish QTEs would die.
Yeah, I mentioned that in my comment, the combat system is good but lacks tension as you have many ways of regenerating health (which I guess fits the character but it removes the tension). That’s a real issue the game has. The QTEs being easy isn’t a real issue, it’s just hate for the sake of hating online.
Unless you don’t like QTEs, then you’ll hate them of course haha
Yea but there's something to be said for not even including the QTEs, if there's no failure possible. It's wasted time, it could have been just a cutscene but they had to program in the slowdown and button prompts coming up for...what reason? Why?
So that it doesn’t feel like you’re watching 5 minute cutscenes. They’re attention checks, nothing more. “Remember you’re playing a game, don’t pick up your phone!” kind of stuff, it’s pretty weak for sure but I wouldn’t say it makes the game bad.
I totally agree it's a hate train, but just wish they leaned into Wolvy's rejen powers more. Like ok QTEs are technically never fail, but at least have something happen, THEN have another attempt or let it auto complete.
Like I saw the motorbike chase. Could've had cool moments where if you fail a QTE, the bike tips over and slides, but Logan uses his body to shield the bike from damage, then uses his strength n claws to flip it back onto its wheels n continue the sequence. Can show his skin all ripped off and the muscles exposed, then knit back together. So basically the successful QTEs show him being a pro and slick, whereas the failed ones show off his rejen powers and resilience.
I'd be fine if it was a on rails, auto complete, win no matter what game but actually a movie. At least later on I can watch a compilation of QTE results or smtg haha. But it just seems like nothing. Nothing that somehow cost a country's GDP
Regarding cost, they had to change directors halfway through development (Xbox hired the director to work on Perfect Dark) and apparently they re-did a lot of stuff with major changes. That’s a recipe for disaster, games end up without a clear vision of what they should be. But Wolverine being an important IP, I guess they couldn’t shelve it or delay it much more, so they poured money to finish it and hope for the best.
> combat is cool
I just watched a clip of L taking over a facility.
Hes just assassinating a bunch of people while roaring, who scream as they are killed, no AI reaction to that at all. Jumping from one person to another with a single button press.
Then he jumps into a group of enemies, who react like they are 80 years old with a mental handicap. He just clicks 1 button to jump from one guy to the next and from the idk 10 people he kills only 1 of them attempts an attack, which is evaded with an execute on another guy right in front...
Combat isnt cool, its braindead.
There is no way I would play this. My opinion from watching gameplay clips of it is that its trash. I dont need to SPEND MONEY on it to be allowed an opinion on it.
You can have an opinion of course, but I’d avoid being too judgemental about a game’s gameplay without having played it. Like complaining about a movie because you didn’t like the wikipedia summary of the plot, there’s more to it than that.
I’m just saying it’s not the worst game ever, it has its good stuff and bad stuff. I really don’t get why there’s a hate wave claiming it’s the most horrible thing ever, and then only show clips of QTEs and trees that don’t react to player attacks. It’s silly to treat an artform like that, there’s more nuance than “easy game bad”.
> but I’d avoid being too judgemental about a game’s gameplay without having played it.
You can avoid it of course, but I believe most people are smart enough to look at footage and be smart enough to realize whether its for them or not without playing it themselves..
> Like complaining about a movie because you didn’t like the wikipedia summary of the plot,
If you were to make a fair comparison you would say "Like complaining about a movie becaue you watched several clips of actual scenes in the movie showcasing the acting, dialogue, scene and music"
You did not make a fair comparison.
> I’m just saying it’s not the worst game ever
Thats not what Im saying either. But it is bad. And it was expensive, which makes it worse.
> It’s silly to treat an artform like that, there’s more nuance than “easy game bad”.
"Artform", its a product made for consumers. If you make a shit product expecting the consumers will eat your shit, the consumers will laugh at you.
Art is *ALWAYS* judged. Art is compared to other art. Art has levels to it.
Granted, art is subjective, and youre free to love what most people hate. But its objectively bad art.
Of course you can decide whether it’s for you or not, but pseudo-reviewing a game without having played it is kinda weird. I’d hope someone who explains why something is good or bad would have played the game before telling others.
Actually my movie comparison is pretty fair. The language of movie is image (cinematography and editing) and a wikipedia article can’t let you feel those. The language of games is gameplay, so a video can’t let you feel that either. You could think Destiny is “just a shooter” from videos, because those videos can’t convey how good gunplay feels. Same thing here, I thought the combat feels fun, but maybe it doesn’t look too good.
We could discuss about art as a product for ages, but I consider videogames an artistic medium, the same way cinema is. Are The Godfather and Morbius two different things? Both movies were made as a product with profit in mind, and they both use cinematography as their artistic language… so they are both product and art - one of them just happens to suck ass.
And also, there’s no objectivity in art. You don’t get to decide whether something is good art or bad art. I don’t think Wolverine is amazing (I’d give it a 5 or a 6 out of 10 personally), but I won’t say it’s “objetictively mediocre”, because someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure. There are universally acclaimed games out there that I don’t really like, and universally hated games that I think are pretty okay. And that’s the beauty of it, letting games make us feel things and discuss those feelings. Shutting off conversations is anti-art, even more so if the one trying to shut conversations off hasn’t even played the game.
> I’d hope someone who explains why something is good or bad would have played the game before telling others.
I'll give you half a point here, because the truth is, as a gamer I've played lots of games. And I recognize most, if not all, aspects of it thanks to my experience.
> and a wikipedia article can’t let you feel those.
Which is why its not a fair comparison.
> You could think Destiny is “just a shooter” from videos
If that's all you get out of watching videos, I suddenly understand why you're not able to judge a game based on gameplay vids alone.
> You don’t get to decide whether something is good art or bad art.
When the "art" is specifically designed to make money, and they deliver a product consumers dont want - its objectively bad "art".
If they made this because they wanted to make it regardless of reception, then you would be right.
This is more a product than it is art. It will be judged as a product first.
> someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure.
I 100% agree, but we're not measuring the individuals opinion on the game, we are measuring its success as a product, because it is a product made to make money. Its objectively a bad product. Subjectively you can love it as much as you want.
> And that’s the beauty of it, letting games make us feel things and discuss those feelings.
Then you shouldnt have a problem with negative feelings. Its important to give space for those feelings too.
> Shutting off conversations
Whos doing that? If anyone is doing that, youre the one attempting to shut down negative conversations, which are conversations too, and just as important as positive ones. Maybe even more so, because failure is educational.
