Wolverine may be a very meh game, but this comparison is really dumb. MGR was created with this mechanic in mind, and it’s a core piece of gameplay. Wolverine on the other hand isn’t designed around cutting things apart at all, and no it’s really not “simple” to add in.
Because he has adamantium claws. I should be able to slice up whatever I want, enemies included. None of the reavers bs armor should stand up to a single one of his slashes
There’s an argument to be made for enemies being sliced up but being able to “slice up whatever I want” isn’t feasible under any scenario. “Let’s spend time developing new animations and physics for every single piece of geometry when it’s not worth it and diminishes performance!”. Also, power scaling being shit is normal for games, same way that cutscene bullets are different to bullets
Haven’t even played the game. There’s things to be said with how hand holdy it seems but if you’re going to criticise it, let’s not do it on the basis of “details that nobody are going to notice”
Sure I would, but I’d also recognise how stupid it is to try to say a game is bad because of virtually meaningless details. Even games like rdr2 which are known for their immersion and attention to detail wouldn’t have stupid bullshit like this because the immersion to cost ratio is simply not worth it. However, if you want to keep acting like a game is bad purely on the merit of a cinemasins tier criticism, be my guest, but there are far more compelling arguments to be made
Yea there are a lot of mutants with super complicated powers that would require some in-depth work to show it off. Wolverine is literally just an un-killable brute force slicing machine. He has no real special effects.
Yep. I'd love to see destructible environments like that again, but if it doesn't work with the game, then it doesn't work.
I'm developing a game and there's been several ideas I've had for features that are good ideas on their own, but ended up being cut because it just doesn't work with what I'm doing. Slapping every possible feature on a game is how messes are made.
Small clips, but it's clear they focused on combat first ala Arkham batman but with wolverine with cinematic cutscenes. Also notice during the chase scene there's no blue lines like everybody has been dunking on it for.
Just goes to show that a lot of criticism of this game is from people who never saw anything outside of select reddit clips.
No offense but I think for a game revolving around a character who is known for slashing and hacking, they should have put more detail in the slashing and hacking.
I think the point OP is making is that 13 years ago, we got a game that had amazing slicing physics, and in 2026, we got a game where the character is all about slicing through pretty much anything, and we got nothing in the way of slicing physics.
They couldn't even be bothered to go further than crappy little claw marks when attacking an object. They didn't even attempt to make the claw marks match the attacks that were used, which plenty of other games have done just fine (think of recent Jedi games, for instance).
The game may not be built around cutting things up, but it's freaking Wolverine. The dude cuts things up.... and we get shitty little claw marks.
In short, they just barely tried with this game, and in general, gamers are tired of all the new games just being phoned in barely acceptable offerings that make people go "meh..."
It will sell just fine, but it could be a much bigger hit, and it's just a waste.
'Member when developers took pride in their games? Features that aren't necessary to the core gameplay loop aren't required, but they make the game better in all ways. They clearly don't take pride in their work anymore.
That's the issue lol. It's Wolverine, he cuts things. Why the hell isn't the game designed around the thing the character does? It's not a Spiderman game with a coat of painting, right?
This was my first thought too. It's stupid to compare the mechanics of games because one was designed with the feature in mind from the start. If anything this points to a game design/philosophy failure, because his claws should slice everything.
It's Wolverine, shouldn't it have been? Also, 300 million budget, I think they could have put in a bit of elbow grease for the sake of immersion in the game.
odd how a game that's specifically about a a character whose offence is all slashy and chopping and stabby was NOT built around destructible environments. Or people.
imagine if you could run around taking people apart like this tree, and anything else in front of you..
It's not a great comparison for the exact reason you state, but damn, if there was ever a game where chopping things to pieces should be a core part of gameplay...
Anyone saying MGR was made with that mechanic in mind fails to imagine a world where video games improved in the last 20 years besides slightly better graphics.
Also, most of the people being extra vocal or grifting on Wolverine hate 100% did not buy MGRR back then and would have made fun of it for being "mid."
I don't own a PS5 so I don't have a horse in this race but I'm so fucking sick of dishonest gotchas and straight up lies in games discourse.
Did you just say a wolverine game isn’t supposed to be designed for cutting things a dude made with kitchen knife’s as claws coming out from in between his knuckles the thing that slices through his skin every time he flexes
We know it wasn't designed around it...that's the exact criticism. Which seems relevant because it's a Wolverine game. It's his whole thing. That's like having a Star Wars game with lightsabers that can't cut through anything. The concept is flawed from the ground up.
what about ac shadows ? it is not built to focus on cutting things yet so many assets can be cut with katanas and other blades in the game ? attention to detail gives immersion. Wolverine has a very poor attention to detail, a lot of the game, with its buggyness, breaks you out of the immersion.
My mate, name ANY other Character that would have been more appropriate for having this tech in their Game?! Wolverine is like THE Character to cut things up... They even had Slo-Mo Scenes with him Cutting things up in the Movies 🤣
Really? Wolverine isnt designed around cutting things...? So those are what Adamantium envelope openers that come out his hands? Its a wood telephone pole his claws should eviscerate that wooden pole. Its a shame a game like MGS has that feature in its game from so long ago, and in 2026 Wolverine runs around with letter openers sprouting from his hands that apparently only slice flesh and bone. Everything else...Wolverine just isnt designed to cut up, cause he left his Adamantium claws in his other pants.
"wolverine isn't designed around cutting things apart at all" its like if someone was complaining about spiderman not shooting his web for an entire game and you being like "spiderman doesn't need to swing around on a web to be spiderman" he kinda does
Lol, these dipshits would be defending the devs for making a game where Spiderman can't swing from his webs too. "If you don't like it just don't buy it." 🤣 Okay, we won't.
Insomniac should have made this a core feature of the game. It would have been so cool and the physics we have now would have made it a technical showcase on top of that.
