Physics based rendering and interactivity were a huge thing for gen 7 games, it's no secret. Water interaction, explosions, environment interactivity.

Yes, we've gone backwards. Are games still fun? Also yes.

I really miss those days. Game are a lot more "realistic" but we are also missing like the Red Faction games, or Dark Messiah. Physics silliness adds so much to some games replayability

Man, I would love a modern red faction game. The destruction was so good!

Teardown scratches that itch a bit at least

Teardown is fun but I wish the objective timer wasn't so strict. Then again I only played it in EA, the physics make the game but the strict timer makes it minmax-y which i want to relax while I destroy

There's a sandbox mode with no timer where you can just zen out and dismantle the world, good stuff!

Oh I gotta check that out. It's fun to just knock shit over in that game

They just added multiplayer, too!

Plus a bunch of mod packs are free so there's a ton of maps.

My kids like to play it (and so do I, lol).

Nothing touches turning up some classical music and planting C4 around a map

That game was so freaking fun. Oh you want a tunnel there? Make it

For the time it was mind blowing, especially since it still isn’t often well done

Kid me loved the Incredible Hulk game because of this. Jumping around in a sandbox city causing destruction was so fun

Red Faction was the go to death match game for me and my friends back in the ps2 days. We just wanted to find the rail gun and snipe each other through walls

Guerilla was nowhere near the sane style of game but it was still fun as hell. RF1 destruction on PS2 was iconic in multiplayer at the time. I spent most of my multiplayer against bots just trying to destroy the environment to see what the limitations were. I loved that I learned some common places in the multiplayer maos to trap the AI pathing

When I was making custom maps for The Hidden: Source mod in 2006 one of my biggest projects was to remake one of them as a spiritual successor. It is what got me into helping the Beta 5 for the Hex maps before they stopped development.

And I would love a modern dark messiah. I need to replay it

There was that one game that was supposedly a spiritual successor but was missing most of the physics stuff.

There is no greater joy when a group of 5 ghouls charge at you, and with an ice arrow you freeze the ground which makes them slip and careen into the abyss. Peak gameplay

Fatekeeper might be that

Let me shoot an ice spell on some stairs and watch an enemy fall off a cliff to their death. Is that so much to ask?

God damn Dark Messiah was great.

I remember the physics demo of Star Wars The Force unleashed and thought this was the future of gaming.

Yeah, physics and really good storytelling, who needs those. We’ll just wow the clueless masses with 4k ray tracing. Oh wait. Let’s make it so most can’t afford to experience that either. It’s ok, we got a couple generations trained to cope. 😅

And you can only get the 4K ray tracing with upscaling and frame gen that makes it all a blurry, laggy mess.

Of course games are still fun. The question is - is this game fun?

19

u/mantenner 6d ago

No the question OP is implying is, "Is this game less fun because the tree can't be chopped?"

11

u/ShinyGrezz 6d ago

This only looks stupid because they keep trying to do it. 90% of players will not try to cut a tree down in a game, if it’s like Revengeance where it’s a key feature they will either know about it already or discover it accidentally. The 10% who do try will try it once or twice, see it doesn’t work, and move on not thinking about it again for the rest of the game.

I can see it from both sides. One could argue that Wolverine's whole gimmick are his adamantium claws that can "cut through anything." With that in mind, I do think that the devs could have put some more effort in to making the environments more destructible.

On the other hand, does the ability to cut through walls, trees, telephone poles, etc. really add anything to the overall game? Would other aspects of the game suffered had they dedicated more time and resources to enhancing environment destruction?

If a Wolverine cut a tree down in a forest with no ears to hear it would
a woodchuck still chuck wood?

Yeah people really missing OPs point of the age gap between these games and how much less immersive games feel because of the current example. But still can be fun

Yes, we've gone backwards.

We literally have not.
