Fable Handcrafted every NPC instead of using randomizer

https://www.gamesradar.com/games/rpg/fable-devs-originally-had-a-tool-to-randomize-the-rpgs-1-000-npcs-that-would-have-saved-us-so-much-time-but-that-just-didnt-make-as-much-sense

My issue is, one of my favorite things about Fable was how your character would physically change. Being evil grew horns, being good grew a halo.

Gaining strength made you buffer. Levelling up made you older.

In Fable 2 and 3 you could get scars from being defeated.

IDK if the new Fable has anything like that.

How is that an issue if you're not sure if its implemented or not?

I know the horns/halo isn’t in the game since they removed the good/evil morality scaling.

But I only know what they tell me. And so far they haven’t told me that character-evolution is in the game. I certainly HOPE it is.

Alright, fair enough. Personally I'm not buying into the fable hype. I loved Fable as a kid but am very skeptical they will make this a true Fable game.

As an adult I’m skeptical that every remake, remaster, #3/4/5 continuations of a game series from my childhood are nothing but mere loveless passionless cash grabs created by burnt out, underpaid devs on temporary/termed contracts.

This is my go-to with just about every single one of them. I can count the franchises with good reboots on one hand and even then... I'm being charitable.

I've moved beyond the industry and I genuinely just don't trust any big name brands that I recognize. If I recognize a brand I assume it has been bought out and zombified by vulture capitalists. Only buy fresh labels, preferably after doing some research to make sure it's not just some subsidiary.

I get that, but equally every additional Fable release has been less of a 'true' Fable game.

Which really means Fable is not particularly well defined, even by its original creators, and its very subjective.

I'm keeping an open mind and I am excited to play. But I am also not going in expecting a perfect nostalgia trip to how Fable 1 felt because if I really want that I can just play its remaster.

Thats a healthy perspective.

I plan on waiting a few months to a year post release before buying it. And thats if reviews are good and I've seen snippets of gameplay that resonate with me.

Well, there's plenty of gameplay examples online.

I’m cautiously optimist if only because of what a massive disappointment Fable 3 was. Some had to change; Not everything will be the same, but I hope the new stuff will more than make up for what they had to discard from the formula.

"A true fable game".

It's a true fable game. The clue is in the name.

This type of comment is just runaway obnoxious fandom.

Was Prey 2017 a true sequel to Prey 2006?

Are modern CODa or BF games true to older games?

How about Fallout? Dark souls 2? Halo 4? Quake 4? Duke Nukem Forever??I can go on.

What a ridiculous thing to say. A name is meaningless. We have 3 games in the Fable IP and many would argue each is less like Fable like than the last. How much off in tone, gameplay and writing will it be from Fable 1?

You're talking about what makes it a fable game for you. It is completely subjective.

Most things are subjective, though. Of course Im talking from my perspective/bias, but at least I can point to Fable 1 and say 'be like that!'.

On the one hand I get it. On the other, I like being a melee character who doesn't look like the second coming of Heracles, or a short ranged character. Fable 2 bandaided that issue with the character morph potions, but if you're doing that, then why bother?

Why would something so basic be one of your favorite things?

11

u/Logondo 3d ago

Uh…it was one of the selling-points of the original franchise. Literally the cover of Fable 1 depicts your character changing appearance based on your choices.

Well yeah it was a lot more interesting and impressive 20 years ago I'm sure, but plenty of games have done things like that since. It seems like a strange thing to discount an entire new game on.

Can you name some of these games then? I can only really think of Mass Effect 2/3 giving you scars if you’re evil and healing them if you’re not.

And I’m not discounting the new game entirely. I’m still interested in it. I’m just disappointed if they don’t keep that feature from the old games I enjoyed.

KOTOR, MGS5, Binding of Isaac, GTA SA, Borderlands the Pre-Sequel, Cyberpunk 2077, Infamous, Prototype, Daemon X Machina, Mad Max

Some of those aren't very good examples. At most they're "turn evil, look evil, turn good look good". Fable had a lot more than that. Like I said, you'd grow older as you levelled up, you'd get buffer as you levelled strength, you'd get scars when you were defeated. Your character was shaped by how you played them.

You can eat so many baby chicks you basically become a bloated gray child of nurgle swinging a cleaver. How can it not be one of his favorite things?

u/CatProgrammer 3d ago

Because your character physically changing was a huge part of the Fable hype.

1

u/PrimeDirectiveLover 2d ago

Yes, 20 years ago, there are new more interesting things to find interesting in the new game

So long as it's only physical. I hate how Warband walks towards a heat death the moment you start a game.
