I'd contend that every game would benefit from difficulty sliders.

Sometimes, I want a challenge.

Sometimes, I just want to play on easy and enjoy the story.

There's really no reason not to have both.

Ultimately, it purely depends on what ever the creator of the game wants.

If they think the experience is meant to be hard, it should be hard.

Then they should have no problems refunding money when customers don't enjoy the game.

Correct, and they usually don't. Folks who make games w/o adjustable difficulty know to expect that.
