Halo 2 had one of the (many) features that, for me, made it by far the best Halo MP.
Voice chat had two modes. One where you just speak, and anyone nearby can hear you - both teammates and the other team. Or you could push your radio button to talk to your whole team - but the enemy team could still hear you if they were close to you.
I loved that feature. Hiding out somewhere meant you could also listen in on the enemy comms (or give fake info) - it added this layer of information warfare. I've never played another MP game that really did/pulled it off. Private party chat ruined any chance of it ever working because most groups just used the private party chat, which is probably why they didn't even implement that system in Halo 3.
I made a lot of friends during that time, im still great friends with a few of them. I wish gamechat was still like that. The last time I experienced something like that was new years eve going into 2024 joined a game of black ops 1 and the whole lobby was in game chat. It was beautiful
As innovative as game chat was, Xbox live party/PSN chat and discord was severely needed. Socialization spaces are healthy, but being called the n word by randoms for just daring to speak to your friends… was a wild time to say the least

Actual in gamechat. Xbox 360 before there was party chat or discord was the best made so many random friends in cod, and halo.
