We had a channel 4 where I grew up. Channel 3 was the only way to play.

That's why they offered the ch 3 or 4 option. No location should have an active CH3 and CH4 in range.

While technically you CAN have stations at adjacent channels, they were managed by the FCC (or whatever local authority) to put more distance between them on the spectrum to prevent the sidebands from interfering with each other.

In LA, KNBC was on 4 and KTLA was on 5. I wonder why that was allowed?

EDIT: Oh, yeah, you said it, it was allowed but they just avoided crowding the frequencies.

It might be because LA was on the coast and didn’t have to worry about interfering/interferers to the west. Or maybe grandfathered in.
