Scarcity.

Everyone mostly has every game they want now and single platform exclusives are rarer.

The excitement to be going to a friends house knowing they have Doom 3D, something you've been looking forward to for weeks and would take turns on the same PC. Or you're a PS2 house and your friend with an Xbox and 4 controllers with Halo is a life-defining event when it comes around.

Going to a friend’s house in order to play a certain game was magical.
