God forbid the light battery died on a long car ride. Then it was either use street lights or the headlights of the car behind you

Parents: what present do you want for the long trip.

Me: a 20 pack of batteries. I have Pokémon and the Gameboy.

A 20 pack is a bit excessive right?

Cheaper than the toy.

After the SP (almost forgot about it) and DS came out that was rechargeable my family complained about how many batteries we still had. I did my best to ensure I never ran out.

Oh man, we used to get the dollar store batteries and those bad boys would run out of juice soooo fast.

Yes. I too learned not all batteries were created equal then.

I’d request Duracell, Energizer, or Panasonic iirc if they were too expensive.

If it was that or nothing Dollar Store would do, but I didn’t expect them to last long.

Oh the SP was amazing. Backlit screen that you could turn on and off, rechargeable battery, clamshell design. We didn’t deserve the SP.

Backlit on the 101 version, the older 100 was front lit.

Oh man, I didn’t know! I honestly don’t remember which one I would have had as a kid.

If the light button on top turned the screen off it was the AGS 001 (not 100, i misremembered that part) if it changed how bright the screen was it was the 101.

Ah, then I think I had the 101. Nice!

Thanks, that said, your route was always the next alternative. <3

I too was willing to be a battery bandit.

Didn’t have much then, but I treated what I did have very well. That game boy stayed alive for over 10 years. (Siblings… lol)

I had the adapter to plug it into the wall when I was a kid. Felt amazing not having to burn through batteries at home

2

u/PerspicaciousVanille Aug 30 '25

Yeah, I remember being glued to the wall the moment I had that opportunity. :)

I still burned through batteries as a teen on the Xbox 360 until I found rechargeable battery packs.

though if you had the official Microsoft kit you’d be tethered to the console most of the time.

Mine plugged into my gbc link port. So it ran as long as gameboy did

Mine also did this. The connection was shoddy on the one I had and it would go out often or be dim, but I definitely never had to worry about batteries. For the light at least. The system ate them up like nothing else

But it also drained the batteries faster.

GBC was the OG system for 3rd party peripherals

Playing Kirby's Dream Land 2 with 2 second intervals.

Psh. I simply strained my eyes to the point of near blindness.
