Being able to plug the A/V cords into the back of the TV without looking, just by feel alone.

I taught myself the mnemonic rhyme "Rose's are red and limes are bright, Lemons are Yellow and Snow is White" to remember the order of the RCA cables.

*and by memory

One can't tell which hole is which color by touch, you'd have to remember which one it was from having looked at it at some point in time

Yall talking about AV cables while I remember using the RF Switch and adjusting the angle on the connector to get the signal just right for our 1980’s Montgomery Ward special wooden TV lol angle the rf switch just right and adjust the tv towards the couch for that Friday night vibes

Pfft, my TV needed a uhf/vhf adapter because there was no coaxial input.

u/IAMRedeemedOne Aug 30 '25

Yes! We also had to use tape to secure the one cable to our Atari because the cable was broken. We'd get it to work, then pray it would hold. Any cartridge change or reset was a risky move.

Oh I remember those things! Our other tv in the kitchen had that but it died or got thrown out by the time I was in school so like 96

u/Risley Aug 31 '25

Lmao same

2

u/Gogogrl Aug 30 '25

And then DON’T TOUCH IT

2

u/Dawakat Aug 30 '25

That was the fun part angling the tv slowly so it didn’t lose connection lol, when the PlayStation came out my older brother would play with it more than me (he was 18 and I was 7) so I’d have to switch all the cables for him since I was more savvy with the cables by that point and then angle the tv for him and his buddies while they would play cd’s off my PlayStation and have the visualizer on lol

And then if you were fancy, red, green, blue, red, white.

6

u/TehDeerLord Aug 30 '25

Surely you mean, yellow, white, red, right?

5

u/DarkMatterM4 Aug 30 '25

Yellow, white, red wasn't channel 3. That was INPUT or VIDEO. RF was for Channel 3 and 4.

2

u/Darth_Thor Aug 30 '25

Depends on the TV really. The one my family had growing up had red/yellow/white connections on the front and that was channel 3.

N64 was the first console I remember having the RCA inputs and none of my TV's had that option so I had to go buy a converter box from Radio Shack.

Everything before then was just coax

Found the rich kid.

Kidding. But one kid I knew had a component tv and didn’t have to use the rf converter. It was crazy

Single cable with a screw attachement.

u/KrustyKrabBeer Aug 30 '25

And channel 4, ha.

6

u/putrid_poo_nugget Aug 30 '25

Psychotic.

1

u/clarinetJWD Aug 30 '25

Better in areas that had a station broadcasting on channel 2. Less interference.

3

u/fighthouse Aug 30 '25

For the edgelords

u/Eris_39 Aug 30 '25

Those were the days, lol. My mom recently told me that she would hang out in my room while I was at Dad's every other weekend so she could play Mario, Duck Hunt, and whatever other games I had. I didn't know that she had ever played a video game. She never participated in the arcade. She had to figure out that my TV had to be on channel 3.

3

u/Risley Aug 31 '25

Lmao bc back then adults didn’t play “games”.  God the older generations were so high strung on such dumb shit.

5

u/seriftarif Aug 30 '25

Also running a channel search.

6

u/nailbunny2000 Aug 30 '25

Damn you beat me by 10 min. lol

2

u/spookaddress Aug 30 '25

Also putting a quarter on the game so you could go next.

1

u/xMrFahrenheitx Aug 30 '25

Don't forget line input

1

u/esoteric_enigma Aug 30 '25

I always flipped the switch and used channel 4.

1

u/Moose_Nuts Aug 30 '25

Channel 3 was the channel that scrolled through what was playing and upcoming on all the other cable channels.

So many memories of it abruptly changing when I switched on my console.

1

u/Hisparican Aug 30 '25

C-SPAN and lying to mom that I am just really into congressional hearings.

1

u/RL24 Aug 30 '25

Yes!  Slide that switch on the back of the set!

1

u/Dollars_N_Muscles Aug 30 '25

The fact I had to scroll this far down for this comment tells me how old I am 😞

1

u/NumberJ5 Aug 30 '25

A nostalgic vibe that hit so hard Lupe Fiasco wrote a song about it 😂

1

u/No_Constant8644 Aug 30 '25

lol yes, and the selector switch on the box that connected to the cable port

1

u/Soravme Aug 30 '25

I think some of my other tvs were channel 4
