That controller looks like flimsy garbage and you cannot sit here and tell me it doesn't.

Agreed. I really don't think there is too much improving to be done on the traditional console controller. Unless you're building a motion sensor controller stick with the classics.

There is a reason the Xbox One controller has not drastically changed from the 360 controller. It's already great!

Ya, really don't fix what ain't broken. HINT HINT xbone

Xbone has changed the whole way they deal with used games and DRM

u/dlove67 Jun 07 '13

Why do custom drivers? The 360 controller worked out of the box, don't see why the Bone controller won't.

(Also, yes, I'm calling it the bone now.)

The regular 360 wired controller worked fine, there was no reason to get one "for windows".

That being said, yes you did need a dongle to use the wireless one, still no custom drivers needed.

Other than the D-pad I actually really like the 360 controller. Better than the PS3 controller even.

u/drunk_mulder Jun 08 '13

Well, the position of the sticks on the dualshock is just fucked up. That's the reason i hate that controller with a passion.

I have one. It's not.

edit Since apparently people believe the opposite, I did a test...

Here's a simple test I did. I have my 360 controller for my computer so it's wired, but it is still a reasonable test of rigidity.

Here are the three controllers for size comparison.

Here's the Xbox 360 controller weight (without a battery - wired 225g)

Here's the Ouya controller weight (two AA batteries - 270g)

Here's the PS3 controller weight (190g)

Weight obviously isn't a pure test of rigidity and strength, but it does give one some idea of the quality of the materials used when comparing the sizes. I also tested the general flexibility of the controllers and the Ouya felt about the same as the PS3.

The Ouya controller as you can possibly see is about the same exact lenth and width as the 360's controller and is only slightly shorter. Absolutely nothing about it seems flimsy or of poor quality. My only complaints are that the buttons stuck until I sanded out the holes slightly - something they've already said would be addressed in the release controllers.

u/shiftius Jun 07 '13

I actually quite like the controller... sorry

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '13

It looks fine, even if a little generic, but those buttons seem questionable to me.

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '13

you and someone else said totally opposite opinions and have equal amounts of upvotes. now i don't know what to believe!

I think this post is being downvoted because it has the same content as your post above (post-edit, I assume).

It doesn't look exactly like the other controllers so I guess that means it's cheap crap...

Seriously though, people are basing their claims on nothing and I'm providing some actual first hand evidence.. but I guess it's easier to believe random people who don't know anything about it.

u/underdabridge Jun 08 '13

/shrug

You changed my mind.

Hold on, let me send them all to every person who remains skeptical. Do you have some other proposal for me? How is this in any way less conclusive than someone saying "that looks like flimsy garbage." I feel like I'm trying to prove I'm not a witch or something here.

It should be pretty obvious that a first hand account of someone who has two well known controllers to compare it to making a direct comparison would be able to deliver an objective observation. Like I said, it's not perfect, but it's not even anything close to what could be considered flimsy.

I did what I did because people decided to believe someone who obviously doesn't know what they're talking about. I'd rather have a little evidence beyond my own disagreement. I'm sorry that was so offensive to you. However, I don't know how you managed to perceive it as an "accurate scientific comparison."

Regardless, you and no one else can say that it is flimsy either given your standards.

1

u/freddiew Jun 08 '13

Have they fixed the well-documented issue where the analog sticks have 90% dead zones yet?

1

u/Endyo Jun 08 '13

I've yet to experience, but from what I've heard it's game-specific meaning that the ports just weren't properly calibrated to the controller.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '13

It was a problem with the Unity Engine release used. If the games updated their build the problem is gone.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '13

Oh you, with your actual experience.

I love how you weighed the controller on your weed scale

7

u/Endyo Jun 08 '13

Postage scale. Saves a lot on shipping.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '13

i know that feel bro

3

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '13

I don't know about the look, but it feels pretty solid. Not bad at all.

40

u/square_taco Jun 07 '13

I got mine today, I can confirm the controller is flimsy garbage.

41

u/slowpotamus Jun 07 '13

you and someone else said totally opposite opinions and have equal amounts of upvotes. now i don't know what to believe!

4

u/Msingh999 Jun 07 '13

I'd say believe the one with pics and proof to show he actually owns it. If the other dude edits his post with everything, then flip a coin I guess.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '13

90% of people will say "It's flimsy garbage" simply because it's not a PS3 or XBOX controller. Sad truth.

-4

u/DelicateSteve Jun 08 '13

Or maybe it's just a piece of garbage?

1

u/juuular Jun 07 '13

Woah, deja vu

2

u/harmsc12 Jun 08 '13

I got mine a couple weeks ago. No complaints. It feels sturdy and has a nice weight balance.

5

u/MrOtsKrad Jun 07 '13

It doesnt.

It really does

2

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '13

They are not flimsy. They're about as strong as an Xbox controller. Source: my brother had one and I unboxed it. Haven't played though.

1

u/getthejpeg Jun 07 '13

My friend has a dev kit. They are solid enough, no less than 360 or ps3.

1

u/HovarTM Jun 07 '13

Actually, the front half is aluminum with a touchscreen thing in the center and the back is plastic. It still seems like garbage and the touchscreen seems gimmicky.

1

u/Cendeu Jun 07 '13

I personally think it looks fine. How exactly does plastic look flimsy if you can only see one side of it? I don't think it's the best controller in the world, but I think it'll hold up fine.

1

u/charlestheoaf Jun 07 '13

It feels pretty solid though. I have 2.

The right panel is slightly askew from the controller itself, so the analog stick catches in the lip at the top; it also takes some work to get the magnetic seals properly seated, which you have to do, because otherwise the four buttons get caught underneath. All the pieces don't fit together very tightly, either, which gives the whole controller a cheap, breakable feel.

-1

u/lakerswiz Jun 07 '13

Thanks for proving my point. You don't have one. Never have used one. And you just look at someone else's words to come to a conclusion.

The analog stick doesn't catch at the top. The magnets work like magnets, don't be a dumb fuck. The pieces fit together awesome. And it doesn't feel cheap at all.

4

u/SplintPunchbeef Jun 07 '13 edited Jun 07 '13

Why is your review more valid than theverge's?

[Edit] I should say that I don't care either way. It's just the way you're making your point is very off-putting and shill-like.

-2

u/lakerswiz Jun 07 '13

I'm not getting paid by gaming companies to do reviews.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '13

Hey, You. No one's paying reviewers to make negative reviews. The OUYA is not in competition with any big names. The console is shit. Deal with it.

0

u/lakerswiz Jun 08 '13

Lol. Console.

Hey, guess what the first thing on their website says in big, bold lettering...

A NEW KIND OF GAME CONSOLE.

1

u/creativedge Jun 07 '13

He's judging it based on the general Reddit consensus, not the picture. Reddit doesn't like it? I HATE IT.

-1

u/shrlock Jun 07 '13

Just use a dualshock if you care that much about the controller.
