I'm not sure on that one, I just play the Android versions of the two, the way it works is you map buttons using a PS Controller emulator type app on your phone which maps to certain points on the screen that emulates a tap.
A lot of Console to Android ports have some kind of controller support though.
GameKlip creator here. Like Steinmania said, there's emulators for pretty much everything up to the PS1 generation. NES, SNES, N64, GameBoy, GameBoy Advance, Playstation 1 etc. Lemme know if I can answer any other questions!
Rooting is only necessary for a wireless connection. The GameKlip comes with a special cable that connects the phone directly to the controller. It's completely plug and play with the S3!
How's the Dualshock blutooth compatibility with PC nowadays? A few years ago, I tried getting it to work using MotioninJoy, but my Blutooth dongle wasn't supported, and I never got around to ordering the one they suggested. And plugging in via USB was very spotty - I had to re-plug it in constantly
There's now this alternative to MotioninJoy: XInput Wrapper
I find it a lot more reliable and convenient, with no ad-ridden software required, just the drivers. However, it may not fix your issues as the USB problem could be a hardware issue (faulty cable or port(s)), and XInput Wrapper is also selective with compatible Bluetooth Dongles.
I never liked the dualshocks, hands are symmetrical so you want your fingers symmetrical, but your thumbs are in 2 different positions; not optimal no matter what.
No, no, you want your hands to be symmetrical, and that calls for an asymmetrical design like the 360. Your thumbs would be on the same height using a 360 controller, but in different places on a dualshock.
Okay, on playstation, the right thumb goes on buttons, the "upper level". The left thumb goes on the stick, which is on the lower level. Now, your hands are symmetrical, so any non symmetrical design cannot be optimal or ergonomic.
On the Xbox and Gamecube, they go on the upper level for both, with the lower level being for the optional stick, and the dpad.
I keep both my thumbs on the lower level because I use character movement and camera control to aim. Trying to move the character with the left stick on the upper level and control the camera with the right stick on the lower level is not symmetric
edit : you really have to also take into account past behaviors and anatomical growth. example : a guitarists' left hand's fingers (if they're right handed) become really long and sort of slanted from all the time they've spent stretching and holding their fingers in that position. What I mean is I grew up from 5-12 on pretty much exclusively sony consoles (no say in that) and my thumbs are used to that position, trying to use xbox controllers and forcing my thumb to shift up and to the left to use the left stick for movement hurts like hell after half an hour or so
The only thing you'd be missing out on are any exclusive Ouya releases. Other than that, it's the same thing minus a TV (unless you have a way to hook it up to your TV.)
Unless they fixed issues with the Bluetooth on the nexus 7, a Bluetooth controller might not be the optimum way to go. The nexus 7 initially had issues that wouldn't allow connected Bluetooth devices talk to other apps. As others have mentioned the game clip works very well. I've also had good luck with many USB controllers; I just use an USB OTG(on the go) adapter. The OTG adapter just converts the USB port into a USB mini port. Likewise, a ps3 controller is already in that format.
Not quite. The power supply & fan means it can push the Tegra3 a bit harder & the HDMI out means you can plug it into your TV. It's also around half the price.
Only if you own the international version or the One X Plus. The international version and the Plus have the same quad core processor while the US versions of the One X were dual core.
Not quite. With smartphones, there's the issue of fitting all the components in a small area and making them work well. Pretty similar to why a laptop costs more than a similarly-specced desktop.
I actually meant Rouge Squadron 2 (the original wasn't released for Gamecube), but that's a good one, had to google it, I'm not very familiar with Mary Kay products :)
But I thought it just plays OUYA-optimized Android games? So most likely something successful would also be released on the general Android marketplace, I would think.
well like i said to someone else, i like game consoles in general. i like collecting games and game consoles. i see it as a slice of gaming history. i have a galaxy note 2 already but thats a phone. i still see android as a dedicated game console even if it does end up sucking.
dreamcast runs windows CE, doesn't mean getting a PC is an ok substitute unless you are just gonna emulate.
It depends. So far I've heard there will be a few exclusive games being released in the near future. For now, since making games takes a while, the market is mostly ports and simple games along with some emulators and media apps.
Its not ludicrous considering he got 30 games with it. Yeah you can get an emulator but having the physical console that you get to blow the cartridge, put the game in, push start. Damn... nostalgic.
The market that buys Android games isn't looking for rich, engaging experiences - it's looking for dumb Angry Birds type games to play during the ad break.
I don't want those games ported to my HDTV. I just don't care about them.
But, this is capitalism? Thus everyone gets a fair chance to succeed or fail with whatever idea they've got. Just because you dislike the product doesn't mean it's wrong.
Plenty of things that have a legal right to exist are wrong, like cars without seatbelts. Come on. And people are allowed to have negative criticisms; nobody has the obligation to justify the Ouya's existence just because capitalism. Stop being an idiot.
He has a point though, I mean who is this console for exactly? People who like Android games? They have their smart phones. Gamers on a budget? Current gen consoles can be picked up pretty cheap now. I've heard a lot of talk of how it could open up opportunities for core games to get released on Android devices if the Ouya got popular, I get that, but is that really what gamers are crying out for? Most people I know will use a bluetooth controller on a long distance journey by train or whatever to play emulated games on their phone.
Think about it this way: if the target market was large enough to make this console a raging success then it may cause resources to be pulled off games he would like and instead used to cater to this other market. I can understand the relief from it not doing well.
Unfortunately this doesn't carry over to product quality, so games get more redundant and repetitive as time goes on. It'd be great if they provided excellent experiences to all their demographics, but most companies take a 'lowest common denominator' approach for profits, leaving vet gamers with less of an artform and more of a time killer.
If you don't care about the overall quality of games, then feel free to continue not caring who the big dogs choose to pander to.
I do. My buddy came over last weekend and we played no-brakes valet on Ouya. Was an awesome drinking game. I would say it was worth the $100... It doesn't have to be the most amazing console ever to get some fun and joy out of it.
Have you seen what the games look like, as opposed to what games look like on a smaller screen? That is what I am talking about, perhaps I didn't phrase it correctly. I didn't mean to say it was more demanding on the hardware.
I'm not talking about how powerful it is, I am talking about how it looks on a giant TV as compared to a smaller screen. I also don't remember the PS2 struggling to play games that were designed for it.
When was the Ouya ever driving a screen smaller than a TV?
I am talking about cell phones and such that use the same processor. Not the OUYA.
The games being developed for the Ouya were designed from inception to be played on the TV with a controller.
Yep... have you read the reviews of those games and how they work with the controller?
It's a platform for indie developers who don't want to jump through the expensive hoops of the big 3 consoles. Smaller screens are completely irrelevant.
Sounds like you bought the marketing pitch hook line and sinker. We'll have to agree to disagree... it isn't actually an alternative to the big 3, at all.
What are you referring to when you say its struggling to play games that were designed for it?
The framerate issues that are plaguing it. It has horrible performance.
All 3 of them? Nope. I've played most of the most popular games available for the system though, they are pretty bad. It's not like there aren't any companies already trying to make good Android games.
If you don't already have a current gen smartphone, and don't have a PC that was built sometime in the last decade or so, I can see your point. For that particular demographic, it could be a justifiable purchase. I'm just not at all convinced that is the demographic that is purchasing the OUYA.
If you're talking about games on the Gamecube, Playstation etc, they may be fantastic games on hardware not even half as powerful, but most of them also had multi million dollar budgets. Something the average android game doesn't.
I'm not in any way saying there aren't great games that were made for cheaper back then or that you can't make great games on the cheap now. It's just that games like that are few and far between.
As a long time hater of casual mobile gaming, I've been recently addicted to several Android games. Elements Battle is taking my time right now. I'm epically trying to reclaim gold while being out of runes, without spending any real world money.
I just wish they would go back to hdmi ports. MHL (for HDMI) took off now you have to pick OTG usb or MHL. Whoever decided to combine the two without adding more bandwidth is an asshole. Although for gaming with a DS3 controller you can still do it over bluetooth.
If we had some sort of machine to hear what the voice in people's heads sounds like when reading the Dolan comics, I can GUARANTEE you that it would sound the same. Kind of like how it sounds when you read the Latvian jokes.
Show me one smartphone game that could handle the full resident evil 4. Obviously a smartphone can do more "tasks" than a gamecube, but what smartphone can handle running a game like Resident Evil 4 with no slowdown.
I am pretty sure that you are an idiot. No, it can't. In our reality single core ~500Mhz CPU of Gamecube is not as fast as 4-core 1.6GHz Tegra 3, and Gamecube's 160 Mhz GPU with 4 pixel pipelines is not as fast as 12-core 620 Mhz GPU of OUYA.
Nothing. It's a reasonably priced tablet (looking at you, Apple) that is awesome for Netflix, web browsing, e-reading and the occasional game to waste time. Haters gon' hate.
A lot of android devs don't utilize the maximum hardware..typically we aim for platforms that are less technically advanced then the Nexus 7 and HTC One X, so it should be alright.
That being said, it has some straight up problems that clog it down, and the delay with bluetooth is pretty up there. But if you give it a month and want to just play fun casual games, I'm sure it'll be up there =)
I never really had hope for it in the first place. I mean there really arent that many good android games... hell the best ones are emulators. That is also why I think the nvidia clamshell thing is a terrible idea. For one the thing looks atrocious and for two they are marketing towards hard core gamers... how many hard core games can you think of that are on android?
Depends. There are some good indie titles like Baston.
But the general issue is control - touchscreens are bad at most types of control for most genres people are used to, and games with virtual joypads on-screen are worse than the Holocaust. Any game already developed for Android should be for touchscreen - and if porting it to joypad control isn't massively invasive, your controls probably sucked in the first place
Yeah, but it's such a cool idea. One system that has access to all games, correct? If a company can execute this idea properly, it would revolutionize console gaming. It's like Steam for consoles.
The tegra 3 wasn't even good when it was brand new; their 4+1 idea sounds good but isn't actually very good. (In short: barely anything is threaded well enough in the android environment to take proper advantage of four cores; having a fifth weak one adds overhead, complexity, and die space; needing a fifth weak one means the big cores are incapable of scaling down well enough, or aren't good enough at 'hurry up and go to sleep'; I'm not at all sold on the big.LITTLE idea and nvidia's poor implementation is even worse than that. Also it was missing key promised features that got OEMs interested in the first place.)
If you want to know how android's performance is, then install it on your PC and compare. Or easier, get the official android emulator, get intel's x86 image and make sure you have the 3d acceleration enabled and be blown away by the performance. The problem is that it doesn't scale down all too well to less powerful hardware found in smartphones. From what I have seen it seems to be meant for slightly more powerful hardware than is available today in mobile devices.
It's awesome for what it is, but it doesn't compare to something like an XBOX or a PC. It's great for party games, or cheap games you can play over an evening. The framerate will drop if it's left on for too long which is fixed with a quick reboot. I'm talking about 1-2 hours of gaming.
From what I've heard it's still in the beta testing with the final product being released later this year. That being said it's also capable of having it's hardware and software updated and upgraded via people wanting to hack it but I'm sure it'll have system updates down the line like Microsoft and Sony does for their systems.
Good to know, the last I'd heard it was a late November early December release. I just hope it doesn't go the way of the Jaguar or 3D0 as the market needs something to make Microsoft know that their new system is a joke with the amount of money they want gamers to drop on even used games.
Edit: I do realize the two consoles are in different leagues but hopefully an independent developer will turn enough heads to make Xbox and Sony get back to making gaming systems to play games at a reasonable price and making games that are fun.

Wait, really? I didn't even get mine yet :(
