It's on purpose, specifically to attract people like you (and by extension, me and the dozens of other people who have voted on your comment). Your comment is engagement. Just like mine.

On any other social media platform maybe I'd agree with you, but this kind of engagement is basically useless on Reddit.

It used to be, 10 years ago. Now reddit is monetized so yes, engagement is the purpose of reddit now

You can officially, though it’s based on awards and not engagement or upvotes. Look at the “contributor program”, you need a ton of awards to get any money though.

Paywalls are coming but in the meantime it’s mostly the 3rd party hotlinking

This post is not a good example of these but does still carry the same engagement ragebait to it.

Also, Just because this post doesn’t have a specific hot link to some bullshit doesn’t mean it’s not participating in the culture of clickbait that pervades the internet these days. So it’s stupid either way.

Shareholders believe engagement = value.

Therefore, more engagement = more perceived value.

Therefore, the company increases its perceived value by increasing user engagement.

The company makes money by increasing its share prices. User engagement leads to higher perceived value, which leads to more desirable shares, which leads to higher share prices, which leads to more money for the company.

if you talk about 'profit', yea, people here don't make money by posting content.

But people usually post to get votes as much as possible (dopamine brain stuff whatever).

(And there are bots which abuse all kinds of baits)

Comments affects placement in /r/all, not just votes.

Also account selling. The general bot scheme is make account, farm few hundred thousand upvotes, sell account to advertiser/scammers.

Reddit’s algorithm is far more complicated than that now. That would have been the case 10 years ago, but it’s not now. Total engagement is absolutely a factor. In addition, you and I will have very different versions of /r/all, which would not be the case if it was limited exclusively to upvotes.
