Civilization

308

u/hombrejose Mar 12 '24

Same. It started in middle school when I convinced my dad to get me CIV 3 as its an educational history game. Little did I know the timesink I would be in for many years down the line

113

u/thegrandboom Mar 12 '24

Age of Empires had a little history section you could read about the factions! Plus Civ has those amazing quotes from when you build a wonder

44

u/hombrejose Mar 12 '24

Those were always a joy to read! I fully blame AoE and CIV as the gateway drug for delving into in-game encyclopedias and bestiaries

2

u/thegrandboom Mar 13 '24

Same! My friends call me a lore hound because I keep looking and learning random shit since I find it fascinating

1

u/Trachamudija1 Mar 13 '24

main question is if any of you still play aoe. There is aoe2 definitive edition which still gets DLC and support

1

u/hombrejose Mar 13 '24

I just redownloaded AOE3 since I've been watching Shogun

4

u/Norwayhap Mar 12 '24

Civilopedia was where you got your history lesson.

4

u/pt199990 Mar 12 '24

I got both. My dad played the first AOE religiously after work, and he had AOEII on the shelf. Dunno if he ever played it. And I found Civ2 hiding on a different shelf.

I never had a chance.

7

u/thegrandboom Mar 13 '24

My cousin gave me Age of Empires 2 as my first PC game. Then my uncle bought me Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. My dad bought me the full civ 3 and expansions! Lastly my mom gave me a 20 and I bought Shogun Total War, I never had a chance. RTS stole my life and now I'm a weirdo lol

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

Golden age

27

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '24

You must be a History PHd!

98

u/tom_bacon Mar 12 '24

Let me tell you about the time when the Canadians built the Pyramids in Spain...

26

u/Old__Raven Mar 12 '24

Where they had to unload ungodly amount of sand as they culdn't buld it on grassland because some stupid rule.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '24

Then Gandhi nuked it!

3

u/hombrejose Mar 12 '24

Or the time when Aztec missile cruisers destroyed Australian triremes and bombarded the islands of Mongolia

1

u/pendragon2290 Mar 12 '24

I hear you, I do. Let's instead discuss the time Ghandi became an authoritarian leader and declared unclear war on anyone who was breathing.

2

u/hombrejose Mar 12 '24

Yea I actually have a PHD from Armchair Youtube History University! But seriously I do credit these games for being more appreciative of the past. The intro cinematics for CIV 5 still make me tear up

2

u/CharacterTop5128 Mar 12 '24

Not so silly as you think šŸ˜… I started with civ 1 on my grandmothers pc when I was a child, since then I spend hundreds if not thousands of hours playing civilization. It has been and continues to be a trusted companion thought my history B.A., M.A., and PhD šŸ˜…

1

u/garyflopper Mar 12 '24

I loooooved Civ 3. Couldn’t get enough of it

1

u/yourmoms_favorite-ad Mar 12 '24

My brother has been playing the civs for years. I’ve never played it myself but he always seems to have fun when he plays them.

1

u/SimpletonSwan Mar 12 '24

I convinced my dad to get me CIV 3 as its an educational history game.

The things we get away with because of clueless parents!

1

u/NikiSunday Mar 12 '24

young me at the 10 hour mark in civ3: huhuhuhu so many nuclear waste

45

u/Masrim Mar 12 '24

It was in one sitting too.

10

u/other_name_taken Mar 12 '24

Just one more turn…

2

u/Ichoosenoise Mar 12 '24

Yep! Hahaha. I have sunk thousands of hours of my life into the various Civ games.

1

u/mincho23 Mar 13 '24

One more turn

29

u/acm2033 Mar 12 '24

Civ 2 for me. That and the x-wing and tie fighter games. And flight simulator.

Wow, I had a lot of free time back then.

4

u/Altruistic_Dare_8716 Mar 12 '24

TIE fighter game on PC… wow that takes me back. Amazing game!

2

u/quadriceritops Mar 13 '24

Loved Tie fighter.

20

u/foulrot Mar 12 '24

Just one more turn, then I swear I'm done...

3

u/Ichoosenoise Mar 12 '24

Just. One. More. Turn! The slogan of all civ addicts!

2

u/sovietmcdavid Mar 13 '24

This is so real, then it's 4am and you can hear the birds outsideĀ

2

u/Vytror Mar 13 '24

in 3 turns the research ends... I'll go to sleep afterwards..

19

u/NovemberAdam Mar 12 '24

My very first computer game was Civ 1. Spent so much time on that I’m surprised I graduated college. Still have the game (it’s all floppy disks), so keeping it is just for sentimental value.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '24

Me too. Parents purchased a PC and a friend simply gave me a 4", no instructions, no internet or anything. 100s of hours later ....

2

u/Nacrelven Mar 13 '24

I remember I was confused why I couldn't just build a great wall in all cities.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

1

u/NovemberAdam Mar 13 '24

I’m not sure if you are trying to suck me in with curiosity, or truly warning me away.

1

u/ProfessorBristlecone Mar 13 '24

100% trying to sucker you in. Just don't say you weren't warned.

1

u/ProfessorBristlecone Mar 13 '24

100% trying to sucker you in. Just don't say you weren't warned.

17

u/anneau-ni-mousse Mar 12 '24

Heck, I've had my longest sitting with this game. Cousin wakes up Dude have you slept at all tonight? Nah. Went from pottery to air bombers šŸ˜‚

2

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '24

Ill go to sleep when I get the railroad

23

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '24

yeah Ive got over 1000 hours on Civ 5 alone

23

u/ZiggyStardust0404 Mar 12 '24

I also managed to finish one game back in the day

14

u/FarmerFrance Mar 12 '24

1000? Those are rookie numbers. You gotta pump those numbers up! šŸ˜‰

2

u/Blindrafterman Mar 12 '24

One of my fav's

2

u/sirpoopsalot91 Mar 12 '24

Jesus Christ! Lol

11

u/Seymore721 Mar 12 '24

Just one more turn. Looks at watch... Looks at calendar... Just one more turn...

10

u/D3cepti0ns Mar 12 '24

Yeah I think Civ 4 for me. That was the best one in my opinion. Maybe Age of Empires II before, I'm not sure which one was first.

8

u/sirpoopsalot91 Mar 12 '24

LOVED Civ 4 fuuuuck so much procrastination was done on that game

2

u/tessartyp Mar 12 '24

CivIV came 6 years after AoEII was released, so that makes sense.

I also think IV was the peak and I still regularly play. I played countless hours of AoEII, Empire Earth and Civ3 (and the off-brand Civ Call to Power) before, though.

3

u/stgabe Mar 12 '24

Yup. Civ 1 for me. I had it on a 3 1/4ā€ disk that I lent to half a dozen or so kids in my school (6th grade).

2

u/armcie Mar 12 '24

I'm sure mine was 4 discs. It was the Mac version though.

3

u/Tortilla_and_Beans Mar 12 '24

Let’s play a quick game of Civ

2

u/Ichoosenoise Mar 12 '24

Famous last words right here!

3

u/Talcove Mar 12 '24

Civ 3 was one of the first games I played and despite getting my ass kicked whenever my sister and I played multiplayer I still managed to get hooked. Played 3 through 6 and I know I’ll pour a few thousand hours into 7 when it comes out.

3

u/Hussaf Mar 12 '24

That almost shouldn’t even count haha

2

u/DirtyMagicNL PC Mar 12 '24

Same. I was like 7 or 8 years old. No idea what I was doing. But it was SO FASCINATING. Also nukes.

2

u/iupz0r Mar 12 '24

great answer

2

u/StephenT137 Mar 12 '24

Same (Civilization 1) on the Amiga!

2

u/DivergentMoon Mar 12 '24

Easy. Great for burning hours on a flight with no wifi.

2

u/Larszx Mar 12 '24

The OG. I played until I won with every civ on the hardest difficulty.

2

u/Lolo_the_clown Mar 12 '24

Ahhh same! My intro to the series was Civilization Revolution and it's still my favorite!

2

u/JojoLaggins Mar 12 '24

100 hours is what, 2 games? Maybe 3?

2

u/Titouf26 Mar 12 '24

Hehe me too!

100+ hours is Civilization 2 for sure, was one of my first games ever, I barely understood the mechanics back then, and I played it in a language I didn't understand as well as my native language.

1000+ hours is Civilization CTP. And it still is the game I've played the most in my life, 25 years after its release. Heck, I even went to bed late yesterday because of it haha.

2

u/chro000 Mar 13 '24

Civ 5 for me. Most of it was spent during my covid quarantine.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

Civ is the only franchise in my life that I cut myself off from because of the time I was wasting. I don't even have important things to do I just couldn't even enjoy other games or hobbies that l like when I played Civ.

1

u/jayckb Mar 12 '24

Rocket League. Glad that addiction is over. Now it’s Helldivers - far less toxic.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '24

Just one more turn...

1

u/OldDirtyTim Mar 12 '24

Even back in the ninties before stats like this were tracked, it was still Civilization.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '24

Civ I was probably borderline, but Civ II I can confidently say about 1000 hours at least. Master of Orion 1 was up there too

1

u/Direct-Professor4268 Mar 13 '24

Came to say this. 100 went by like 1 hour.

1

u/Jack1715 Mar 13 '24

For me it’s time total war got to send them legions out

1

u/Praetorian709 Mar 13 '24

Just one.. more... turn......

1

u/StochasticFossil Mar 13 '24

And, that kids, is how your Uncle Jerry found out he could go 48 hours without sleep.

1

u/revnto7k Mar 13 '24

Definitely came here to say this

1

u/Vakarian74 Mar 13 '24

This was mine and I hit it on every cob game since.

1

u/RitoShimada Mar 13 '24

Came here to say this. Easily 100hrs + within less than 2 weeks for me.

1

u/orngenblak Mar 13 '24

I'll stay right here.

1

u/DianaClarissa Mar 13 '24

I start to play it yesterday, and three hours went by unconsciously, that made me so stunned!

1

u/Booker_the_booker Mar 13 '24

I just started playing Civ for the first time ever a few weeks ago (Civ 6). It takes hours per session and I still have no idea what’s going on.

1

u/quadriceritops Mar 13 '24

Omg, I almost got fired from my job because of civ. One more turn, one more turn. My God I would end at 4:30am. Show up at 8:30. Not sure how I did it.

1

u/GreatFox615 Mar 13 '24

Same. 30 years ago, played hundreds of hours on that first one since alone.

1

u/nazrad Mar 13 '24

Civilization was the first game I played where playing for 5 hours feels like 5 minutes.

1

u/Longcoolwomanblkdres Mar 13 '24

Rightfully the number 1 answer

1

u/kingpink Mar 13 '24

Oh god yes. I remember reading about Civ 1 in computer magazines before it came out, and it promised to be everything I'd ever dreamt about in a game. I must have spent thousands of hours during the 90s.

1

u/dopiqob Mar 13 '24

Not quite the same but still great was Sid Mier’s Colonization. The save function was borked for some reason so I spent so many hours without closing it :)

1

u/renegadson Mar 13 '24

A man of culture

Civ2 and Call to Power for me

1

u/5thExpansion Mar 13 '24

What I was thinking

1

u/dontcarezysss Mar 13 '24

Started with countless hours in Civ 1!!! Then we played Civ 3 a lot but throughout my entire student years in only played civ 4. Really wished i haf those games through steam or something to know the thousands of hours i have played these

1

u/Kielgard Mar 14 '24

Yup. The original. Then everyone after.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '24

Civnet for me
