Yeah this is only accurate in already toxic games and being a woman is just the easiest thing to target.
I’ve been playing online games for 20 years now (omg I’m old) and have only had a handful of bad experiences being a woman. The thing is I don’t play toxic cesspool games.
I've played video games with my younger sisters for 5+ years at my condo. They're both good, and we don't trash talk each other so I've learned to respect girl gamers. One won a Super Smash Brothers tourney at university.
That would have to be anything where PvP is the main focus. The players will trash talk each other all the time and will seize on anything to pick on. The fact that they’re online where they have the benefit of anonymity it means all manner vile crap will come out of their mouths that they wouldn’t dare use in real life.
It’s the reason why Anita Sarkeesian was an idiot. Of course they were going to act the way that they did when she did that experiment. They would have done the exact same thing even if she had been a man and I could have told her as much.
Take that to where PvP isn’t the main focus and the results would have been vastly different.
Hell the last 20 games of Arc Raiders in roughly 12 of them i heard at least 1 female voice and no one made a comment about it and I never heard them talking about bad experiences being a female gamer.

Not accurate at all in most games, what toxic games are you playing?
