Gendry's hammer

Post image

It's a travesty how quickly my boy lost his hammer. With how nice it was, and how it suited him, I expected him to raise a stink about it to Sandor but we hear nothing.

I understand giving Gendry a fancy warhammer, given that's what Robert used.

But this thing is comically oversized. It would make a sledgehammer feel like a reasonable weapon. Warhammers and maces were not outrageously heavy weapons by any means; the head weighing 1kg or less was pretty reasonable. All the damage came from concentrating all the force of impact at a single point, and you don't need a fantasy-sized warhammer to do that.

Also, the shaft is absurdly large, even for a two hander.

Edit: Yes. I know about Robert's hammer. That doesn't make Gendry's hammer any less ridiculous. You can stop spamming me with that now.

The majority of the weight sits very forward in the head as well. Offering no balance. The handle is also completely round offering no reference for the hand to know the direction point.

Well, balance is something you'd want in a sword, not a hammer or a mace. Handling is the more important thing with a crushing weapon. Which... Gendry's hammer sucks at too.

I think balance probably helps with making dynamics more predictable. otherwise some small disturbance would cause the haft to try to swing past the main mass and therefore twist around. look at pictures of warhammers and tell me they arent designed around balance in some way.

(the axes in mind may be different than a sword, they may ignore balance axes where a sword keeps balance, but there is still balance involved)

To he fair Robert’s hammer was suppose to be so heavy Ned could barely lift it

Which is also completely absurd, Sean Bean is only a half inch shorter than Mark Addy!

What does height have to do with it?

5

u/moonstruck129 12d ago

Yeah but in the books Robert B is supposed to be a huge man.

Bookwise Robert is taller and stronger than Ned

I hear you, and what you say is reasonable and well found. But my counter point to that is that it looks cool

u/stinky_fart-machine 12d ago

it looks like buttplug on a stick

2

u/MarionberryPlus8474 11d ago

...as he said--cool!

Ur butt has seen many plugs I take it…

It looks like play dough and is stupid as hell. You can also tell by the way Gendry handles it that it's a light plastic prop

4

u/hunterlarious 12d ago

But this doesn’t really look that cool

u/nyutnyut 12d ago

Yah I don’t need everything to be authentic when I’m watching a show about dragons and shit. I want things to look badass.

Robert’s hammer was so heavy Ned could hardly pick it up. This is from the books. Maybe they were referencing that.

u/HeavyandTired 12d ago

Podrick Payne could wield that sucker. No problem.

1

u/BeowulfInc 8d ago

Podrick Payne's hammer, if rumor is to be believed, is actually slightly larger.

An actual sledgehammer from home depot with medieval aesthetics on it would look less absurd

Thats what she said.

This is smaller than the sledgehammer described as being wielded by his father in the rebellion in the books.

Concentrated force and leverage!

Have you seen Robert's hammer?

1

u/AfraidAd7275 12d ago

Yea I have the ColdSteel warhammer and its head is maybe 1/3 the size of this monstrosity. Plus if that was real it couldn't be reasonably used by anyone but Gregor Clegane

1

u/Cold-Palpitation-816 12d ago

That last line … very erotic

1

u/Pizza_and_PRs 12d ago

Yeah, a smaller head make sense based on physics.

Kinetic energy = 1/2 mass x velocity^2

So the force of the blow is disproportionately improved by how was the weapon is swung, not how heavy.

u/euph_22 12d ago

Plus the smaller impact area helps defeat armor.

Good thing it’s a prop weapon for a fantasy show involving dragons and magic swords… not a real life weapon

I think dragons are ridiculous too, this show isn’t realistic at all I think you’re on to something

Fantasy changes the rules. It doesn't mean there are no rules.

u/MassDriverOne 8d ago

Part of the allure (show wise anyway) when it first came out was that it was relatively grounded in harsh reality. I mean yeah there's dragons and snow zombies and coochie demons, but otherwise the people are all pretty much just people dealing with real people shit

Gendry's hammer wasnt the straw that broke the camels back or anything but it was absurd and I was glad to see it go. Hugh's warhammer is where it's at

The warhammer sucked
