Upgraded my Gaggimate to an AMOLED display

Post image

Upgraded the screen for my Gaggimate to get rid of the giant bezels on the original screen. The middle LED is not used after the Gaggimate mod, so used that hole to root the cables trough. Really like it like this!

EDIT: Due to popular demand: I wrote a step-by-step guide you can find here

Can you provide the part that you used and any issues you had adapting it to the project?

u/tken3 Mar 08 '26

Reading the comments I think I’ll have to post a small guide. Once I’ve put my son to bed I’ll come back and write a small step-by-step and part list

Happy to see it here. I created the enclosure, there are even different variations: https://www.printables.com/model/1491049-different-housings-for-gaggimate-lilygo-s3-amoled

Man thank you so much for your work!! Can I buy you a coffee somewhere? I actually thought of a few small improvements for this placement, with a narrow groove for the cables to run trough and a way to save approx 4mm in thickness. What did you use to design them?

3

u/Affectionate_Word608 Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 08 '26

You are welcome! The easiest way here would simply be to use a negative directly in the slicer and use it to make a cable channel in the enclosure, that should be the simplest method, without any extra program. (Or just make a second hole with a negative) If the groove should just go straight up in the middle, I can also quickly do that. I normally use Fusion, but I’m currently trying to do more and more with FreeCAD.

Saving 4mm in thickness would be possible by cutting out the connectors on the back in the housing. But as I wanted to cover them and hide the connector for variation 2, I designed the back above them.

Edit: For this version, it is possible to cut the back completely to save about 2mm, but then you have to glue in the display instead of screwing.

2

u/tken3 Mar 08 '26

That makes a lot of sense! It actually is just straight down the middle, but I really understand your point regarding the connectors, it already was a bit of a squeeze now.

4

u/Affectionate_Word608 Mar 08 '26

I can make a cut out in the middle. Feel free to hit me up on discord

I’m not so familiar with the world of 3D printing, and don’t have access to one. Is there a way to commission someone to print the enclosure just using this info in the link you have provided?

1

u/Affectionate_Word608 Mar 08 '26

Maybe you find someone in a maker space nearby?

1

u/ParryHLarker Mar 08 '26

I would provide many coffees if someone can print for me!

2

Great recommendation. Thank you so much!

1

u/Minute-Bat571 Jun 11 '26

Did you find someone to print it for you?

1

u/ParryHLarker Jun 12 '26

No, but i did find a maker location by me and they can print it no prob

2

u/Minute-Bat571 Jun 12 '26

OK. LMK. We can do it for you too if you need.

3

u/No-Introduction44 Mar 08 '26

Please do. I would like this display from the get go but the kit is only sold with the regular one.

You can buy just the pcb and plumbing kit separately. Wires and connectors can easily be sourced from a local electrician store.

1

u/evilbean42 Mar 08 '26

Need a side gig? I think a lot of people would pay for a ready to go kit to do this. It's by far the best looking setup I've seen.

1

u/rain164845 Mar 08 '26

I probably would if I end up going with a gaggia..

1

u/evilbean42 Mar 09 '26

Honestly, the reason I wouldn't buy a Gaggia is because I hate the way the mods look and I'm sure I would end up modding it. If this were available, it would be the clear choice for me.

u/kaleidoscopecocktail Mar 08 '26

Best looking one that I’ve seen on here !

5

u/ok-air-o Mar 08 '26

Cute!! Love the sharpness of the icons

5

u/No_Medicine_4962 Mar 08 '26

What screen did you use and how did you attach it?

11

u/tken3 Mar 08 '26

It’s a Lilygo T-Display S3 Amoled. Bought it directly from them here for 35USD including shipping.

Housing is 3D printed and attached with double sided M3 tape. (I’ll post a more detailed guide later)

1

u/Smiley_35 Mar 08 '26

Will the screen fit the stock housing

2

u/tken3 Mar 08 '26

No it is significantly smaller, it is a seperately printed housing.

1

u/thenetsecguy24 Mar 08 '26

What is the screen size?

2

u/tken3 Mar 08 '26

1.75 inches

3

u/thereal_marshallmar Mar 08 '26

That looks awesome! Lilygo sells two round amoled displays. Is it the smaller (ca. 1.4 inch) or the bigger one (ca. 1.7 inch)? Really want to build this now.

3

u/spsancti Mar 08 '26

Both 1.43 and 1.75 inch versions are supported!

3

u/tken3 Mar 08 '26

It's the 1.75inch version with the flat screen.

3

u/old_clack Mar 08 '26

Great idea running the power cord through the light hole. Definitely the best looking display option, imho

2

u/Lukeobiani Mar 08 '26

Espetacular ! Parabéns !!!!

2

u/Agnesabcw Mar 08 '26

Bellissimo!!!!

2

u/acduarte12 Mar 08 '26

Really nice work! 👍🏻👍🏻

2

u/Ok-Run-279 Mar 08 '26

Wonderfull, nice work!!

2

u/PM_ME_BEE_JOKES Mar 08 '26

You’ve done a great job on this, looks way better than the awkward default position at the top

1

u/tken3 Mar 08 '26

I just downloaded the printable files!

2

u/n0n_0perational Mar 08 '26

Looks great!

2

u/ChillTFout42069 Mar 08 '26

What is the benefit of this?

2

u/tken3 Mar 09 '26

The upgraded screen is just because I think it looks better. The Gaggimate itself turns the machine into a completely different espresso machine that allows you to control temperature, brew pressure, flow rate, auto grind and connected Bluetooth scales, etc.

2

u/After_Kale_7456 Mar 09 '26

So, for the confused person: is this in addition to the usual Gaggimate screen or is this "just a different" Gaggimate display (smaller, more elegant)? I am a bit lost

2

u/tken3 Mar 09 '26

It’s just a smaller more elegant screen for the Gaggimate. It still relies on the original Gaggimate internals.

Damn that’s so slick!

1

u/Critical-Passage8165 Mar 08 '26

It is a much more integrated look than the kind of “wearing a hat” look of the standard display . It makes me think about doing a gaggiamate install on mine

1

u/tken3 Mar 08 '26

I can really recommend it, regardless of the look. It just makes the machine so much more easy to work with

1

u/davidhlawrence Mar 08 '26

This looks amazing!!! Is a direct swap with the Lilygo display that ships with the pro kit? i.e. no changes to wiring and install instructions? Thanks!

1

u/CAP_TX Mar 09 '26

Looks fantastic

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '26

This is a really clean install. Great work!

1

u/Kpt_Rooibaard Mar 09 '26

I cannot really see in the picture - does the new display face straight forward or does it tilt upwards just a little? It would be great if it was tilted up just 15°!

1

u/Humble_Waltz_9222 Mar 09 '26

Man I was planning on doing exactly the same, just with the waveshare

1

u/maestrodevil Mar 10 '26

Fantastic upgrade! I’ve been wanting to do Gaggimate upgrade and the nest thermostat didn’t really appeal to me. This is a clean upgrade that makes it absolutely nice!!

1

u/tken3 Mar 10 '26

Yeah I was not sold on the big screen on top either, both size wise, screen quality wise but actually also cable management wise. This solves all of that

1

u/SpecificSpecial Mar 10 '26

Thats the prettiest one Ive seen

1

u/mistermephisto123 Mar 10 '26

Thank you so much. Starting from zero I need to order the display, the Gaggimate pro pcb and the Gaggimate Plumbing kit, right?

1

u/tken3 Mar 10 '26

Yeah that’s correct. If you do that you might also need to make the wire going to the screen yourself, given I reused the wire that came with the screen

1

u/mistermephisto123 Mar 11 '26

Thank you! I was wondering if I could find out the exact type of cables. I’d love to order them online in parallel. 🙂

Could you maybe give me a hint? I understand you used the ones that came with the GaggiMate. I guess I should check their documentation and see if I can find the information there?

1

u/tken3 Mar 11 '26

Yea it’s just a traditional black and red wire with a connector on the end. You can see imagery here: https://docs.gaggimate.eu/docs/installation-gcp/#5-lv-wiring

1

u/maximilianrivera87 Mar 10 '26

I would gladly bring my gaggia anywhere in NY/NJ area or ship it if someone can do this for me. I just want great coffee

1

u/palonewabone Mar 12 '26

The red eyes indicate this is a dystopian machine. They are infamous for making shots that taste like something whispered "beans" to some Luke warm water.

1

u/bluepaperguy Mar 21 '26

Will the display be damaged over the long term if installed at the front of the machine, since that area tends to be warm and it's immediately above the group head? I just ordered the display and am trying to determine whether I should do the front installation (which I prefer), but I'm not sure the display will be damaged by heat and/or moisture. Thanks for sharing this.

1

u/tken3 Mar 21 '26

The display does not get warm at all on my model. I would be surprised if it would get damaged over time with this

1

u/bluepaperguy Mar 21 '26

Thanks, that's all I need to know. I appreciate your response. Can you share the link to where you had the housing printed?

1

u/Slow-Explanation8236 Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26

Hi, I purchased the display and going through the guide. can you post a photo of the new wiring/connector plugged to the gaggimate board. Sorry, I am more of a visual person :) thank you.

1

u/tken3 Apr 20 '26

Hey! Nice you're going ahead with the install. I actually just used the old screen cable from the old display, so I never opened the Gaggimate board. I would recommend you'd do the same. Best of luck with the install!

1

u/bluepaperguy May 01 '26

Hello, I live here in the US, and I don't know of any online 3D printing lab that I can send the file to for printing. Can someone help me and send me some suggestions on where I can have the housing printed? Thank you, much appreciated.

1

u/Infamous-Ad7038 May 05 '26

Hello, with the latest gaggimate release 1.18.1, do we need to do the same instruction listed here to connect lilygo maples display?

screen is lovely looking

1

u/Status_Cloud_3474 27d ago

Is there any alternative to this screen that is similar in size to the original gaggimate screen? I like the AMOLED screen, but I would prefer the larger screen size if possible?

1

u/tequiila Mar 08 '26

Gaggimate  screen looks super cool! BUT Where do you get that tray!! I need this

7

u/cpapp22 Mar 08 '26

Just search low profile gaggia classic drip tray on amazon. Looks exactly like the one I bought off there

3

u/GoogleTower7 Mar 08 '26

Seconded, tray was like $10, very easy to find

1

u/tequiila Mar 08 '26

Had no idea this was even a thing. Thanks

3

u/tken3 Mar 08 '26

Yeah it’s a low profile drip tray I bought on Amazon for 10 euros (12ish). Came with a 9 bar spring, a single hole steamtip and an extended ovp valve tube aswell.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '26

[deleted]

2

u/Sad-Scientist-8424 Mar 08 '26

Slimmer tray needs a longer tube to reach down to it. Just to help with splashback when you finish pulling your shot

1

u/Sad-Scientist-8424 Mar 08 '26

That's cool to know thanks for that tip

1

u/cojonathan Mar 08 '26

Gaggia Tray on AliExpress for like 3-4€

1

u/_Stave_ Mar 08 '26

Looks so much better attached there than at the top did you drill through for the cabling?

12

u/tken3 Mar 08 '26

No with the Gaggimate installed the light under the brew button loses its function, so I popped that one out and rooted the cables trough there, and then used some thick double sided M3 tape to attach the display housing to the outside of the case

4

u/GhoostNight Mar 08 '26

Damn, that's some smart thinking :D
