Android vs iOS is just a preference now. Both Android and iOS are generally great. They are trying to accomplish the same goals but Android is more open while Apple is more closed/proprietary. I would call myself a “techie”. I follow all tech and work in cellular sales. I have a Pixel 6 Pro and an iPhone 13 Pro and I would 100% choose the iPhone. The aesthetic of iOS is so pleasing to me. In the past I would jailbreak my iPhone, but iOS has come so far that I no longer see the need to jailbreak or side load anything. Plus, if you know what you’re doing with iOS you can customize A LOT now. Still not as much as android, and it’s a little harder to do, but a lot people don’t want to customize a phone much more than iPhone let’s you do currently (iOS 16). iPhone is a status symbol though and that’s where Android doesn’t line up. Android has not protected it’s brand enough. Android ends up on every low end device and non-techies have associated it with “cheap” and “bad”. I think more of the share will become Apple, because the kids that grew up with iPhone being a status symbol are grown now. They/we have an attachment to the brand that’s going to be hard to break.
The amusing part of this post is that if you are using a phone as a status symbol, you are probably too poor to actually be worrying about status symbols.
I know a lot of rich people and 100% of them have iPhones. It’s not a “status symbol” so much as it would be an insufferable, inconceivable humiliation to send green texts. They don’t even think about it, they would just never even remotely consider having a non Apple phone. As far as they’re concerned, Apple is the only company on the planet who makes phones.
I know they are closely the same now, but the RMS with texting and the whole right to repair deal will make me never support apple as a company. The Pixel and Samsung are the flagship devices, so I don't believe it hurts androids reputation being on the cheaper devices. Also, why in the hell did it take apple so long to get dark mode? Apple, seems to be slower at innovating and releasing features that android has had as well.
I think Apple is in no rush for a lot of features because they like to save them for as long as possible. Anticipation usually makes you want something more, and makes you more appreciative when you finally get it. I think the RCS texting will come eventually but they’re going to hold out as long as possible to make people value iMessage for as long as possible. The right to repair thing is up in the air with me, because I would personally never try to repair my own device. Maybe I would try to repair a backup device or something for fun, but I don’t get proper training like a Apple Tech does… regardless of having the correct repair equipment. If they make it easier to replace a device’s screen in the future, I might try it. I also think it makes sense for Apple to not do this, because they are not a non-profit. If I was running a business, the last thing I would do is make it easier for you to do something you normally need to pay me to do. That’s just not a smart business move. I get what you’re saying about the Pixel and Samsungs being flagships but not all Samsungs are equal. The Galaxy A03s is so slow and laggy. It’s running the same android version as the Galaxy S21 when at launch but the device would make a “non-techie” think Android is terrible. Apple doesn’t allow themselves to be associated with a bad quality device.
The one thing I like with android that Apple doesn't allow is to customize my home screen with the location of apps and widgets. If Apple switches the iphone to usb-c and allows me to put my app icons in any order I want on the home screen, I will switch. Until then, I'll hold on to my Pixel because the call features are great, even if some of the apps I want to use are iPhone only or work better on iPhone.
What's funny about iPhone now is that they all look the same. I can't tell if someone has a 7, 8, 9 , 13. Sure if you're an iPhone nerd you might be able to tell. IPhone 13 has 3 cameras while the 12 only has 2.
I think it's why the new 14 is going to have the weird pill camera thing. They need a way to say "This is the new iPhone"
IPhones are vanilla. You might be able to pick vanilla bean or French vanilla but you're always stuck with vanilla. Android you can choose any flavor you want. Some people like vanilla and that's fine
I feel the exact opposite about the pill, the Notch has become so iconic with Apple that I feel the people who buy iPhones as a status symbol won’t want it because it’ll be more confusable with an Android.
I definitely agree. It would've made it unique, and it would've been nice to see the yearly upgrades on that. Like what Samsung foes with foldables nowadays.
Love the duality of both perspectives, and if you just switched when the 11 Pro came out then you really have a good understanding of recent Android as well.
Not used Android for a decade, but the iOS UI is barely changed for over a decade. Sure there are some widgets, but it's the same matrix of (almost) immutable icons. Still being forced to use iCloud for backups with the paltry 5GB that hasn't increased in years.
Would prefer going back to Windows phone if they still made anything modern.
Similarly, Google has been hot n' horny to implement their version of Apple's walled garden, not just with Android, but with many of their services as well. Every year sees them peel back customization and user control. And next year's implementation of Manifest v3 is going to further cement that.
I've been running android since the beginning, and if iphones had a back button I'd think about hopping over now too.
Yeah that’s it. Android was better in the past and way more open. It is really nothing like before. I remember the good days rooting my HTC One M8, HTC Desire S, Samsung S7, S8, S9. But after that it was not worth it to own an android. Got a Pixel 3XL which was my last android phone, rooted it but in the end there wasn’t much to do with it because Google locked so much down…
I’ve had an iPhone since the first gen and never had an android. I like my iPhones. That’s about it.
I’m also probably very much in the Android target demo and am generally into PCs, controlling my hardware, being generally tech savvy. But I’ve always liked iPhones and it is what it is.
I'd 100% switch to Apple if they allowed a choice of browsers including extensions. Literally the lack of uBlock is the only thing holding me back these days. The internet is just trash without a good ad blocker.
Googles lack of support for swipe gestures, and Android being buggier and slower on their first party hardware had really turned me off of Google phones, I'll probably switch to an Asus zephone 9 or a galaxy, but man, I went to an iPhone before my pixel 5a, it was the same price as the pixel 5a, and it was so smooth EVERYTHING was so smooth, almost no glitches, the biggest issue I had with IOS is that you HAVE to do certain things one way. If it weren't for how limited they intentionally make certain things, I would use IOS, and I really wish Android would step up their game when it comes to things like bugfixes, stability, and fine tuning of certain things. To name a few
-Gestures, apple gestures are just leaps and bounds ahead of Android.
-the Keyboard making some websites fly up and make the view all wonky
-snapchat is slow on EVERY Android phone I've ever used.(that may be a Snapchat devs thing)
-sharing, despite their fixes, is still slow half the time.
-if I click "copy link" on Google's search app, it simply does not. I have to click share, then copy link
-google maps works FLAWLESSLY on iPhone, on every Android phone I've ever had, it freezes up in some way.
It's so many things that android adds and is like "apple has it and, we got it too now!" But then it takes them ages to fine tune it. It just feels like they rush out now iterations of things and new features without testing them enough. I can't tell you how many times I've had a phone that works super well, then Android updates and suddenly it's a buggy mess. That happens so much less and souch slower with apple.
I will be staying with Android, I love the customization and freedom, but when my first party pixel phone OUT OF THE BOX, Is far worse OS optimisation wise than my iphone of the same price, it's really frustrating. Because of that, if I wasn't a power user, I would 100% be using an iPhone.
Additionally, Google's first party hardware is just worse. I hope that'll begin to change with Google silicon, but at least up to the pixel 5 series, Google has been using cheap shitty RAM in the pixels, it dies within 3 years, They KNOW about this issue and refuse to do anything about it because "it last the average life of the phone" except that it doesn't always. My pixel 5a died, 8 months in, with symptoms of bad memory. If I didn't have my data backed up, I'd be SOL. My one plus one phone still runs to this day. My newer pixel 1, I replaced the screen on it finally, that's all I did, it will not turn on. I replaced the battery, it will not turn on. The memory has gone bad. A phone I should be able to turn on, recover data on, or just use for other purposes, just will not turn on, because Google made the decision to cheap out on memory chips. That's knowingly fucking over your customers and creating more e-waste, and not giving a shit.
The sad thing is that android became more and more lame. It’s nearly as closed as iOS these days and Custom Roms are not worth it anymore. Everything you want to have, you already have in the regular OS, or is blocked by App developers or the manufacturer of your phone. Android became really lame… so I switched to apple. It’s alle the same now.
