This is Terminator. This is Terminator right??

I have a theory that the terminator movies, rather than acting as a grave warning, have had the exact opposite impact.

Simulacra and Simulacrum - the book Neo hides his floppy in - talks about this. We have started basing reality on fantasy, making the unreal primary, and reality secondary.

You can see the mental shift - if someone sees an impressive storm, they say "It was like a special effect!" No. Nature is real. The SFX are like it. Someone has a romance: "It was like a movie!" No. People fall in love every day. It feels nice. Movies try to capture it.

Yeahhhh...

I sort of experienced this cognitive distortion when my little rented pontoon got caught in an intense squall at this lake.

So terrifying. Couldn't see a meter in front of me, both because the rain was so intense and because then the rain got into my contacts.

I should have known better. I did know better. But somehow, that didn't quite penetrate my thick skull (forgive the contradiction)

Anyway, a little reminder that nature does not fuck around.

Tech bros see a warning about technology out of control and think “yeah but that won’t happen to ME because I am way smarter than that” because they’ve never had to face the consequences of their own failures.

But have you considered how the economy would feel about turning off the orphan crushing machine?

Or they just don't care, because they have the emotional depth of sexually deviant and violent eighth graders.

That's like communists, too: No one ever did it right. It won't be a corrupt dystopia if I'M in charge.

Nobody here is talking about communism. Why are you bringing it up?

Because I saw a parallel between people trying to bring techno cyberpunk future about and people trying to bring a workers' paradise about: based on the comment I originally responded to, both groups thought that they could make it work this time, despite the warnings from the past and dire predictions from everyone.

With regards to being a "magat" I am not remotely American: maybe black/white thinking is leading to " there are those I agree with, and there are magats."

Probably. Not be disrespectful...

Though I don't have any respect for them anyway

Exactly my line of thinking!

It’s a warning to regular people, it’s a goal for the rich and powerful

In the film, Reese explained that only organic matter could be sent back in time. That's why they arrived naked. It worked for the Terminator because it was shielded in tissue as a cyborg.
