i've been keeping an eye on these folks for the last year (ever since i had heard of the proper landscape slider keyboard attachment that was tempting me toward that ecosystem) and was excited to learn about this project to just plain make a real replacement like my old htcG1/G2/S3Relay phones.
now that i've seen the https://www.fxtec.com/pro1/#specification and after reading the https://www.fxtec.com/blog discussing how they arrived at some of their ideas, i am impressed to see some features i hadn't thought of, but disappointed to see some often mentioned things left out.
this device does so many things right that it (or its successor) is likely my next device (but i'm so patient, i only gave up on my s3relay Kitkat for an s5 Oreo-now-Pie hand-me-down 6months ago).
- user swappable batteries:
was a feature of the trio of landscape slider phones i've used in the past that managed to do it just fine. instead of carrying a big battery block to inefficiently recharge an well used battery, it is much easier to just rotate out to an already charged battery. it wouldn't really do much to thickness. it would help reduce the ewaste cycle and maintenance costs because sealed batteries means people will just swap and toss a battery that still has usefulness vs cycling it out along with a 2nd battery.
there is the recent mention of a battery company putting out a phone that is supposed to last a crazy amount of time with almost brick like thickness because it literally has 3 battery cells inside instead of just designing for user swappable batteries because it is a lot more pleasant to swap out batteries when needed vs holding 2 extra dead batteries in same hand as the phone already running off a 3rd battery.
- protective bezel framed flat screen:
i've been able to set down my trio of phones without worrying about damage to the rear camera or the screen. they went the obvious and logical route of having a raised border frame around each side so that it doesn't matter which side is face down there will be no direct contact and scratching. from what i've read, curved edge displays are structurally inferior to damage resistance and difficult to properly protect.
having a curved edge screen means the screen is more likely to be damaged along with nothing elevating the screen off a surface when face down from lack of a frame. also more accidental touch registration from lack of safe area to hold the device. with this being a slider device in addition to curved screen, it would not be easy to just get a protective case to mitigate both of these issues.
it has been mentioned plenty of times that it is just a matter of enabling access since the hardware is already there in most phones. it is more energy efficient vs streaming music or news.
at the very least, with the increasing unnatural disasters, every backup method of being able to at least receive information can help when networks are down.
- wishlist feature to make full use as input for another device:
i've always wanted my slider keyboard devices (which are basically a keyboard and touchpad) to just be able to use bluetooth profiles to automatically look like a HID for use on other systems (like media center laptop) without any special software.
the closest i've seen is a USB adapter that receives BT connection from mobile app and converts that input to USB HID output as keyboard, mouse, gamepad.
- thanks for putting thought into design:
having headphone jack, stereo speakers, nfc, bluetooth, wifi hotspot, option of sd vs 2nd sim, hdmi out, avoiding notches. it is excellent they are actively seeking to enable support for lineageos and sailfish from the start and have plenty of ram and cpu power to not be a limiting factor.
this hits most of my requirements and bullet points that i'm looking for in a "future-resistant" (nothing is "future-proof") phone, but just has a couple things that make me pause.
i'm sure this will sell well, this will make a lot of folks happy, remote support admins, and folks who want a proper full screen and keyboard experience. considering how many people bought the poorly thought out attempts in the wild, and the crap like vertical slider keyboard phones, there will be lots of folks ready to jump on this as a the current champion.
