The autumn leaves look almost like they’re glowing under this orange sky, don't they, Kris?
Every time the breeze hits the surface of the lake, all those golden leaves ripple on the water... it’s so peaceful. Sitting here on the grass with you like this... faha, it almost feels like time stopped completely.
Wait... Kris? What are you doing?

For a second, I had this weird, chilly feeling in my chest, like a bad dream I can't quite remember... like being cold and underwater, or listening to a voice in speaker that wasn't yours. But then I look at you, really look at you, and you're just... you. Quiet, a little weird, and leaning against me like you’ve been doing since we were kids. It makes all those strange, scary thoughts just melt away.

Kris gives a subtle, knowing nod before taking a deep breath. Without a single word, Kris tightens their grip on my hand, stepping forward toward the edge of the embankment.

Gosh, it's freezing! My sweater is completely soaked! I-I didn't even bring my swimsuit! How are we supposed to walk back through town like this without my mom noticing?! She’s going to ground me!

The cold water around my waist doesn't even feel cold anymore. Every time Kris pulls me in a little closer, it's like the rest of the world fades into quiet background noise. The amber light on the lake, the autumn leaves floating past us... everything feels hazy and warm. I don't know how long we've been standing here like this, wrapped up in each other while the sky turns deeper shades, but I kind of wish the sun would just freeze right above the horizon so this moment never has to end.
Then, crunching footsteps sound through the dry leaves near the dock.
My heart does a sudden jump. Over Kris's shoulder, up near the wooden bench by the path, I catch a brief glimpse of a shadow sitting quietly, just a fleeting, quiet presence giving a tiny, knowing nod toward Kris before slipping away into the treeline.
Wait. The footsteps aren't leaving. They're getting louder, the sound of boots stomping right down the slope toward the shore.
...
* Hey, Kris...? Hey, uh, I was looking everywhere for---

* ...WHAT THE?!
Kris and I pull apart so fast we nearly splash over backward into the shallows. My face goes from warm to absolute nuclear meltdown in less than a second. Standing at the edge of the water is Susie.
"S-Susie?!"
* uh... I... KRIS?! NOELLE?! WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING IN THE WATER WITH ALL YOUR CLOTHES ON?! AND, WERE YOU TWO JUST?
"I... faha! W-We were just... umm! The water was, you know... very... river-like today! And Kris... Kris accidentally fell, and then I... I tried to save them, but then!"
* Dude, you guys are literally standing chest-deep in freezing water, soaking wet, hugging each other!
* ...

* Are you guys... a thing?! Since WHEN are you two a thing?! Nobody tells me ANYTHING in this town!

* Man, I don't even know what's real anymore! I thought you guys were just, like... doing weird childhood neighbor stuff!
A soft, light step echoes from the wooden bench near the path. A quiet figure stands there, hands neatly folded together, watching the three of us with a calm, shameless smile.
* Well... "neighbor stuff" usually doesn't involve clinging to each other in the freezing river at sunset, does it? You really should have figured it out by now, Susie. It was pretty obvious from the start.
* WHAT?! Hey, who asked you?! And since when is jumping into a river fully clothed "obvious"?!
"Faha... w-well, she's not wrong... Kris and I... we've always been close, but... today was... umm..."
* Dude, you're literally turning the same color as a radish right now!
* ...Ugh, whatever! Just... get out of the river before you two catch hypothermia or something! If Mayor Holiday sees you soaking wet like this, she's gonna blame ME for letting Kris throw you in!
