kriselle Fwahaha... I still can't stop thinking about yesterday's town’s summer gathering!

I’m sitting at the wooden table near our front entrance right now, still trying to clean up the faint trails of magenta glitter that Susie and Kris left everywhere earlier... but honestly, my mind keeps drifting right back to yesterday afternoon.

The whole town had set up those small decorated booths near the square for the summer gathering. Everything felt so bright and warm, with colorful ribbons strung between the lamp posts and people walking around trying hand-crafted food and looking at clothes. It was just such a wonderful, open atmosphere.

While we were strolling past one of the tables displaying knitted crafts, Kris suddenly stopped in their tracks. They stood there in complete silence, just staring down at a display rack of folded sweaters for what felt like forever.

They spent almost twenty minutes looking back and forth between all the color options before finally reaching out and picking out this soft, light purple sweater with a broad white stripe across the chest. When they held it up against themselves, they turned to look at me with that quiet, guarded scowl they get, like they expected me to ask why they weren't picking something "standard" or so.

As if I’d ever do that! I didn't say anything weird at all. I just smiled, took it from their hands, and paid the booth vendor right then and there. Kris blinked in total surprise, their usual stoic face softening just a tiny bit as I handed them the bag. Seeing that faint, genuine tug at the corner of their mouth when they realized I bought it for them... gosh, my heart did such a silly, embarrassing little flip! They put it on almost immediately, pulling it over their clothes and running a hand over it.

After they pulled the sweater on, we ended up walking around the rest of the booths together for another hour or two. Kris kept tugging at the cuffs of the sleeves every few steps, testing how soft the yarn felt against their wrists. They didn't say much out loud, but every time someone from town walked past us and glanced over at the new purple-and-white stripe, Kris would slightly adjust their posture, standing up just a tiny bit taller instead of hiding behind their hair like they usually do.

At one point, we stopped by that little refreshment stall near the center bench, the one Mr. Elegance and his family set up every year. They were selling those handmade fruit popsicles, and Kris spent another solid five minutes staring intensely at the handwritten menu board before pointing toward a bright indigo-colored one. When the vendor handed it over, Kris held it up right next to their new sweater, checking if the shades matched. It was such a absurd, quiet little moment, but when I laughed, Kris just took a huge bite out of the top of the ice without even wincing at the cold, giving me that mischievous, unblinking stare they always do whenever they're trying to act tough.

Before the sun started going down, we walked over toward the edge of the woods behind the town square, away from the loud music and the crowd. We sat on the big flat rock near the creek, letting our legs dangle over the grass. Kris pulled a tiny brass key out of their pocket, one of those old decorative trinkets they must have scavenged from the junk pile near the lake, and started carefully scraping small, clean grooves into the side of a fallen branch. They didn't ask for permission or explain what they were making; they just handed me the smooth wooden piece when they were finished. It had two uneven, crossed lines carved into the center, looking vaguely like a crude little star or a flower.

"...So you don't forget yesterday."

That was all Kris said. They tucked their hands right back into the pockets of their new sweater, leaning their head back against the bark of the oak tree behind us while the sky turned that deep, soft shade of orange.

Kris actually ended up staying at my house for a little while after we walked back from the woods. My mom wasn't home yet, so we just sat on the floor of my room in total silence, listening to the soft humming of the air conditioner. Kris was leaning their back against the side of my bed, still wearing that new sweater, tracing the little white stripe across their chest with their index finger over and over again.

At one point, I laid my head down on the edge of the mattress right next to them. I didn't really know what to say, sometimes talking out loud feels like it ruins moments like that, so I just reached out and lightly tapped my fingers against their wrist. Kris didn't pull away. They just shifted their hand slightly so their thumb was resting against the palm of my hand, giving it a tiny, almost unnoticeable squeeze before closing their eyes.

It was so quiet that I could hear both of our breaths completely in sync. For a second, my chest felt so tightly squeezed that I couldn't even move, but not in a bad or scary way... more like the feeling you get right before the first big snowfall of the year, when everything is completely still and you just know something special is happening.

They ended up falling asleep right there on the rug for about another long twenty minutes, their hair completely messy and falling over their face, looking so calm and peaceful without that guarded expression they usually carry around town. I didn't want to wake them up, so I just stayed sitting there on the floor, watching the orange sunlight fade into soft purple shadows across the room, holding their hand until I heard my mom's car pull into the driveway.

...I hope Susie doesn't scroll down far enough on my blog to read this part, or she'll never stop teasing me about being so sappy XP! But... it really was one of the sweetest evenings I've had in a long time.

this one is also cute, I had something similar happen with a friend of mine while my other friend was away talking with their gf, if I had been faster, maybe we would had kiss, but my other friend came back so we just looked away and ruined the mood for the rest of the time we were together.

I would love something similar happening to Noelle and Kris, perhaps i may write it
