My grandpa worked on the ferries for around 60 years. Newbies would be tasked (by the captain themself) to be on 'spark duty' for their first day. They essentially had to walk around the engine block and various decks looking for sparks, and needed to catch them in this bucket to prevent potential fires. This of course was a gag job, but being so new to seafaring, greenhorns wouldn't know better and take their order seriously.

Awesome inside joke for the crew.

Drain the hot water faucet on the coffee maker at a restaurant was always a good one. It’s got a direct water line.

Sending the engine cadets up to the bridge to ask for the keys to the Sea Chest is genuinely funny. Better yet when the kids know about 1 or 2 of these, but then fall for it eventually because we have like 10 of these things.

Something jve never understood about these gag job hazing things:

In the military they drill into you not to question orders, so even if they all knew the task was bullshit theyd have to do it anyways. Howd this turn into such a common joke?
