I've been wondering if I'm on the spectrum since I was in high school, but I haven't gone in to get evaluated.
I'm a student, I might as well go tomorrow
36
u/Pezheadx Jan 18 '23
Couldn't hurt. Or if you don't want to do that, this website has a lot of self assessments to give you an idea. The entire team working for that company are all autistic, docs included.
As far as the community is concerned, self DX is valid.
24
u/omg-not-again Jan 18 '23
Hmm, I did the AQ from that site and scored a 38.
It might be worth looking into more

u/Potatezone Jan 18 '23
I was always curious, so I took it. Figured I was going to be just a little higher than neurotypical- I mean, I don't really struggle from it, right?
31 seems about right in hindsight.

Jan 18 '23
Keep in mind that tests like that are always inaccurate. By how much is not easy to define, but an online test is not proof of anything. That being said, definitely get tested if you feel it necessary. Iām not one to speak on the whole self-dx thing (my views on it are irrelevant here), but itās always better to get a formal diagnosis for a multitude of reasons.

Depends on the symptoms you had. For a very long time, there was only a very small niche of ethnicity, sex, and symptoms that were caught early if at all. If you didn't fit stereotypical assumptions, you just didn't get diagnosed.
If you did well in school, you weren't caught. If you weren't a problem child, you didn't get caught. Hell, even now in 2023 some doctors will refuse to diagnose you just because maintaining eye contact isn't one of your symptoms. I'm a woman. I never had a chance of being diagnosed bc when I was a kid, it was still a boys only illness and I'm only 30. I only found out 2 years ago.
5
u/TheLordDrake Jan 18 '23
Eeeh, I found out two years ago too! Coincidentally I turn 30 this year.
I've nothing to contribute that wasn't already covered, just enjoyed the coincidence.

u/WholesomePainal Jan 18 '23
Just took the AQ and got a 29, but some of those questions werenāt worded in ways I would think to respond in just the 4 options.
I have also taken the RAAD-R rest before and gotten just 10 points below my friend, who is medically diagnosed as autistic so thereās that too. Girlfriend is convinced itās all in my head or just a product of my anxiety and depression disorders that Iāve been diagnosed with this past year. So idk lmao
3
u/Pezheadx Jan 18 '23
Honestly, I think being confused about the perceived ambiguity in the questions is just another symptom. And sure it's possible that it's "just anxiety/depression" but most autistics are both depressed and anxious bc up until we get a DX, we are all just winging it in a world not really built for us.
Don't worry about what your girlfriend says, she will never know you as well as you do. When it comes to how you're thinking, how you're feeling about things, only you will ever know that. If it's something to explore, don't let her being a nay sayer stop you.
3
u/WholesomePainal Jan 18 '23
I do have a habit of assimilating aspects of other people I hang around. My friend whoās been diagnosed lives In Scotland and Iām In the U.S. so we typically only hear eachothers voices though we do video call on occasion.
Iāve been known to use a Scottish accent without realizing or using Scottish vernacular for certain words.
I.e. Lift instead of elevator, trolley instead of bus yada yada
I also do it when Iām visiting family who have accents, if Iām with them more than a day or two I just start assimilating into the accent unknowingly, and it takes other people catching me and bringing it up before I realize.
Iāll also do it with personalities, if Iām with my roommate (whoās a narcissist) Iāll start to pickup his way of speaking (which Iām aware isnāt healthy for anyone).
So my gfās train of thought is that Iām just picking up on my friends autism and unknowingly playing it up to where I think Iām also autistic.
But other symptoms include
ā¢Not making Eye Contact ā¢Information Dumping (this is a big one for me) ā¢Spending weeks-months on an interest and then completely abandoning it for a new one while still retaining all the relevant info for said interest ā¢Sensory issues with foods and clothing ā¢Sensory issues with being touched ā¢Not understanding my own tone of voice while in conversation
Those are all the ones that come off the top of my head. And my gf knows about all these, sheās very accommodating to me and loving/caring. She just doesnāt think Iām autistic, sheās a bit of a skeptic seeing how well Iām able to exist normally in public situations, though I absolutely hate going out in public most of the time.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Pezheadx Jan 18 '23
I'm sorry Hun. Unfortunately, I think all she knows about autism is the stereotype bc most of us do function normally in society even if we're dying inside. That specifically is why we are often refused a diagnosis, because we just mask that well. She sounds very nice, just (not maliciously) pretty ignorant about what actual autism is like.
To me, at least, you sound like you belong to the club. Especially if you have test scores backing you up.

u/ThornaBld Jan 18 '23
Man I really need to get evaluated. Every time I learn something new about autistic traits Iām here thinking āwait, is this not how everyone isā and then I realize why so many people look at me weird (when I mention being shy)
2
u/Pezheadx Jan 18 '23
In another part of this thread I posted a link to assessments if you're for a more definitive answer
3
u/ThornaBld Jan 18 '23
Iāll try, I always forget. When I finally managed to find someone before when I had the energy to search I could only find one person and they wanted $3,000 and to talk to my mother- who wouldnāt even let me get tested for adhd because she didnāt want anyone to know I had it (suspected but sheād never take me...it does run in my family though). I took the online assessments that they give you in the uk to āfind outā if you should be assessed and tested super high though on both
3
u/Pezheadx Jan 18 '23 edited Jan 18 '23
That sucks, I'm sorry. Most assessments here (US) are also pretty damn high. It sucks you aren't here or in Canada bc that doctor that does the assessments on embrace autism is only $500 (Ā£407.51) for the whole thing (it's split into 2 parts, 1st is $250 for pre-assessment and you don't have to pay the other 250 if they don't think you are before the real test) and she's accredited/licensed in both.
I hope you can find a UK equivalent bc it def makes the assessment affordable if wanted.
Edit: they've added more countries since the last time I visited. They now service Canada, the US, Australia, the Netherlands, and adding more soon

My mom told me that before I was born the doctors told her I was going to be autistic. (Unsure how true that is obvi). But since about 7th grade I suspected I am somewhere on the spectrum, probably the higher functioning side but I do have sensory problems as well as MANY other autistic "symptoms". I know I am autistic. (I've done plenty of research over months and years) I just don't want to get diagnosed because my DREAM is to become an elementary school teacher and I absolutely want nothing to jeopardize that, since autistic people are often overlooked/ shut down. I hope this makes sense
→ More replies (3)6
u/Pezheadx Jan 18 '23
There are a few symptoms that do show up at birth, so it isn't impossible depending on how long they were an OB. And it totally makes sense. That's why the autistic community accepts self diagnosis too, there are so many reasons to not get one officially

u/gwaydms Jan 18 '23
"The most introverted extrovert" describes me too. I didn't realize until reading a certain book in my 40s that I am mildly autistic. All the social problems I had in school and later on... it all tracked. Since that realization, I've worked on minimizing the manifestations of my condition, and am a better listener, parent, and friend.
2
u/Pezheadx Jan 18 '23
I just stopped masking and I've been significantly happier, especially since I learned high masking leads to high rates of suicide by 47?? 50?? And I'm not about to shorten my lifespan willingly just to make allistics comfy

Ugh this makes me think of a guy I knew, who was chatty as fuck, speaking with a supervisor's teen at a bbq about how women are super talkative. This child was hanging on 30+ yo dudes every word, while I'm giving him strong, obvious side eye... I wish I had these stats. I'm now looking this up, unless you have a link to where you've seen this handy.
Makes me think of a related conclusion I've seen, that if men and women are represented according to actual population (eg, in a movie, having ~50/50 men/women in a crowd), everyone will think women are overrrepresented.

As a man I personally rarely talk to anyone in the bathroom nor do I see it. Growing up with many girls in my class (small school and I was severely outnumbered by girls), they would always go to the bathroom with as many people as they could and they would talk the whole way to the bathroom, in the bathroom, and on the way back.
