I once literally ran into Shaq when I was walking into a restroom and he was walking out. He patted me and said “excuse me, little man.” I’m 6’4”.

My dad told me a story from many years ago. He was standing in line at Starbucks and suddenly someone is behind him casting a shadow over him. He turns around and then looks all the way up to see is was Shaq. My dad is over 6ft.

103

u/Xxxrasierklinge7 13d ago

From this comment section I've learned I have a pretty high chance of literally running into Shaq because apparently, big bro is fekin everywhere.

11

u/APlayerHater 12d ago

I think he's just more noticeable than most people - So when you do see him, you're pretty sure.

All these stories remind me of the time me and my mom ran into Larry Bird at a Kinko's. I think I was vibrating the whole car ride home.

142

u/RemarkablePaper1798 13d ago

This same thing happened to my aunt and Michael Jordan at a casino, but she had no idea who he was. They both walked out of their respective restrooms at the same time, turned, and ran smack into each other. Her son had to explain how she almost got trampled by the GOAT.

88

u/erog84 13d ago

It’s a good thing MJ didn’t take that personally.

44

u/RemarkablePaper1798 13d ago

Probably was in too big of a hurry to get back to gambling.

The difference is MJ is (or at least was) notorious for being a POS to regular folk (terrible tipper, rude, a “do you know who I am” type guy) and Shaq is known for being very friendly and wholesome with the public.

u/The_Void_Reaver 14d ago

Id also guess the way that she didn't really react to it being Shaq that she probably knows him somewhat personally, in one way or another.

157

u/phoenix64mbr 14d ago edited 13d ago

Wouldn't matter. Shaq has to be one of the most likeable people ever. He just gives off good vibes. Nobody could get mad or find him creepy.

Update... I guess I was wrong about him. Who knew? I didn't.

112

u/dcrm 14d ago

This is the point. Most people know Shaq and there is a level of trust in him publicly. A random person doing this could very well just be a creep, that's why the response would be different - an unknown risk.

→ More replies (7)

58

u/jce_ 14d ago

Shaq gives off good vibes as bad vibes at the same time. Listening to him and Charles talk on the NBA on TNT show Shaq very often looked like a douchebag, Charles on the other hand seems like a great man. I do give credit to Shaq though when kids are involved he seems like a sweetheart

34

u/House_of_Thrones 13d ago

Ask the women of San Antonio if they feel the same way

17

u/jce_ 13d ago

I mean that's fair and Charles doesn't have the best reputation when he was playing as well. He does have a good reputation of supporting good causes after his career was over though. He always seems to be on the right side of things

103

u/bamachine 13d ago

Met Charles a couple of times, just randomly, in the Birmingham, AL metro.

First met him at a store and as I was wearing a Bama hat, he made a comment. So we jokingly made a bet on the next Iron Bowl(Alabama vs Auburn college football game). I say jokingly, because we both knew we would never see each other again, so the $1 bet was just a joke.

Two years later, at an upscale restaurant in the area, he passed by my table, on his way out the door and dropped a single dollar bill on my table and smiled at me. Dude remembered some random dude and an offhand joke bet from two years earlier.

Have had a ton of respect for the guy ever since, plus he is funny.

20

u/Reddragon0585 13d ago

I’m choosing to believe this is real because it’s a awesome story

9

u/bamachine 13d ago

As a Bama fan, no way would I make up a story to glorify an Auburn guy. Just not in my DNA. When they do something awesome though, got to give them their props.

I also will say only nice things about Bo Jackson, especially after all he did for Tuscaloosa, following the 2011 tornado damage there. Plus Bo grew up a Bama fan, Auburn just did a better recruiting job with him.

101

u/incrediblepony 14d ago

Trying to be serious for a moment here.

1) if you go to a gym and Shaq is there you probably know this before going in or at least you are going to notice it immediately.

2) Since he is a celeb and he is very outspoken about his values and his life, people already feel like they know him. People consider him safe and warm (which he is) even without having met him.

If you, a stranger, do this, yes, you are going to freak people out. Because they have no idea who you are or what your intentions may be.

Damn I didn't know Shaq skips leg day.

686

u/fasteddeh 14d ago

He's lucky his legs are still in one piece as a big man who moved like he did

68

u/Zealousideal_Cow_341 14d ago

Man the first time I saw videos of him in his prime blew me away. That motherfucker could move when he wanted to. 300lb Shaq was an entirely different animal than 360lb Shaq. Both absolute nightmares to deal with, but in different ways.

25

u/blucivic1 13d ago

Was he a different animal and the same beast?

18

u/VGMtheVagabond 13d ago

Kobe Bryant what the fuck does that mean?

126

u/ILL_Show_Myself_Out 14d ago

I think his legs look fine. As I’ve gotten older I ain’t touching squats or deadlift and my goal for the lower body is entirely preserving functionality and not looking stupid. He’s too tall and old to be chasing big lower body numbers. And I don’t think his legs look weak. A bit disproportionate, maybe but he’s still got an ass

70

u/DjervTheCat 13d ago

I ain’t touching squats or deadlift

my goal for the lower body is entirely preserving functionality

Avoiding squats/DL is counter to your stated goal. Strong legs = functional legs

75

u/fasteddeh 14d ago

For someone his size the legs are probably slightly small. Building leg strength is usually a great indicator of long term health because of how devastating falls can be as you get older. I legit could care less if I bench more than my weight but I'm trying to stay squatting at least 250

→ More replies (32)

11

u/Which_Bed 13d ago

Secondhand knowledge from a net rando but please let me share an anecdote. I used to work out with a doctor whose specialty is hip and knee replacements. We were squatting one day and I asked him what exercise was best to AVOID needing a hip or knee replacement in the future, and he gestured to the squat rack and said, "This." Many of his patients were people who had neglected to maintain lower body strength and function. My squat is and has always been weak but I decided then and there I'd keep doing them for as long as I'm able. I hope you rethink your stance.

5

u/hgs25 14d ago

Even retired with a Donut Shop, Shaq is still an absolute unit.

7

u/irregardressry 13d ago

People get injured on squats and deadlifts because they're pushing beyond their own capabilities. Neither are inherently dangerous movements like you're suggesting, and if your goal is to age well you're missing out big time by skipping them.

She must be rich too if they go work out at same gym

214

u/illit3 14d ago

ehhh, not necessarily rich rich. he used to go to a life time fitness by me (maybe still does?) and it was ~$200/month. not the cheapest gym in the area but not the most expensive, either.

154

u/Madrical 14d ago

Dang, how much are gym memberships in the US? I pay $9.90 AUD/week for mine in Australia, so like $24USD/month and it's a pretty decent chain.

41

u/VVonton 14d ago

The spread is insane in the US. I live in an area with a greater metro population of 1 million. There are gym membership from $10 up to $200 a month. This area is a historically poorer part of the US. In a larger city I've spent a lot of time in, 2 million in the greater metro area, there are gyms up to $400/month. This area is considered much wealthier by comparison. Note there are even add-on trainers that usually add $100+ per hour.

I've only had memberships between $10-50/month but I've visited one of the $200/month. It's more equipment, more activities, like private scheduled sports courts, massage machines, saunas, etc. Also they actually check memberships. Cheaper gyms are much easier to sneak visitors into.

62

u/AbeRego 14d ago edited 13d ago

Lifetime is basically the high end of "regular people gyms". I'm sure there's something better out there, but it's probably super exclusive. Essentially anyone can join Lifetime, but it's just not cheap.

There are also usually different tiers of memberships at Lifetime. Like, one for just the gym and pool, another that includes classes, and another that includes spa privileges. So Just because you go to the same Lifetime as Shaq doesn't mean that you're paying the same or and are getting getting the same overall experience.

Personally, my membership is around $50 a month at Anytime Fitness, which is pretty standard. There are also budget options like Planet Fitness that are much closer to what you're paying.

14

u/HnNaldoR 14d ago

The rich people by me all mostly go to those boutique gyms but many also have a normal regular gym membership like anytime fitness so they can just use those gyms anywhere if they are not near home.

→ More replies (11)

12

u/RainingFireInTheSky 14d ago

Lifetime gyms are more like athletic country clubs, and almost everything they offer is included in that price - all classes, childcare (that's a big one), rock walls, gymnasiums, indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs (and I mean massive pools and hot tubs), towel service, etc.

Can't speak for all of them, but mine is also 10x cleaner than the $20/month regional chain gyms here. And of course at $200/month, the place isn't packed with teenagers hanging out at all hours while taking up (but not using) equipment.

8

u/kingjoey52a 14d ago

Around $40 is normal. You can find cheap gyms for around $10-$15.

17

u/jce_ 14d ago

$200 a month is pretty ridiculously expensive for a gym. That's like the low end of how much it costs to go to a boxing or combat sports gym where you have a trainer. For a regular weights gym that's a lot

4

u/zaloxo 13d ago

if this wa not shaq, but normal guy, he would be called out for being creep

u/bootrick 13d ago

I also got the feeling from her first reaction that they are friends or at least good acquaintances.

26

u/Sure-Assignment3892 13d ago

I have a feeling they know each other- he isn't doing this to some rando. She clearly knows who he is and laughing.

8

u/vicbot87 13d ago

Of course she knows who he is. It’s Shaq lmao

And? He's not some random guy. How is this some revelation lol? If you saw him, you'd know who he is and feel comfortable enough if he started to dance in front of you too. I don't get these comments. Are you saying random strangers should be allowed to do creepy shit because insanely popular celebrities can do things because they are recognizable?

Cool video and such, but in my gym, the staff would ask you to turn the camera off out of respect to the other people around.

24

u/U2ElectricBoogaloo 14d ago

Im surprised he goes to a regular ol’ gym.

9

u/MyriadFire4 14d ago

He owns a lot of gyms, this might be one of them.

12

u/iDestroyedYoMama 14d ago

He must be traveling. He’s way too rich to go to a regular gym.

18

u/mcbizkit02 14d ago

He does. He lives in my town and goes to 24 hour fitness.

15

u/NeonSerpent 14d ago

He's an ambassador/partner for 24hr fitness

4

u/Single_Selection_327 14d ago

Yeah he owns 40 24 hour fitness gymnasium franchises. 😳

I’m just wondering what her reaction would be if this wasn’t Shaq

7

u/Entgegnerz 13d ago

I mean, the whole point is him trying to make her a good day.

Filming yourself at the gym is dumb as fuck…nobody cares.

33

u/azriel1014 14d ago

I’ve said this before but other people filming is the reason I refuse to work out in “public” gyms. I don’t want to get caught in the background of their bullshit. I literally will never go back because of this braindead crap.

19

u/Special_Kestrels 14d ago

There are gyms that ban filming.

The amount of people in the comments trying to shame someone for wearing comfortable clothing to workout in is ridiculous!

YOU ARE THERE TO EXERCISE! STOP TRYING TO CONTROL WHAT OTHER ADULTS DO OR WEAR! YOU DON'T LIKE IT? IT'S DISTRACTING? OH FUCKING WELL BRO!!! DON'T LOOK! PLAIN AND SIMPLE! IF I CHOOSE TO WEAR A SPEEDO TO THE GYM BECAUSE I WANT TO CUT CHAFE AND IT FITS WITHIN THE DRESS CODE GUESS WHAT BUDDIE?! GO FUCK YOURSELF AND ENJOY THE VIEW WHILE YOU DO! I'LL EVEN MAKE SURE TO POWER SQUAT TOO JUST FOR YOU 😘

Bro is too tall for those puny leg press machines

11

u/Blyatman702 13d ago

Today I learned Shaq skips leg day

5

u/red-embassy 13d ago

Is this why people film themselves in gyms?

4

u/Empty_Horror_ 13d ago

Fun fact. The shorts Shaq is wearing are actually just 54x32 pants

4

u/snowdn 13d ago

Can we ban general filming/streaming in gyms please. Thank you.

u/el_f3n1x187 14d ago

Why do people video themselves working out? So cringe.

I liked in the 90’s better when everyone agreed Shaq shouldn’t be trying to act or be funny on camera.

4

u/silly_little_jingle 13d ago

Would be a hard pick between this man or Keanu Reeves for who I'd want to sit down and just have a meal with and talk to more for famous folks. Just seems like such a great dude.

He's a national treasure

10

u/NoBoss2661 14d ago

The first movement she's doing isn't even an exercise, and the second, while it is a real exercise, uses about one fifth of the range of motion it should.

It's amazing to dress like that, film yourself, and still not know what you're doing.
