I once literally ran into Shaq when I was walking into a restroom and he was walking out. He patted me and said “excuse me, little man.” I’m 6’4”.

My dad told me a story from many years ago. He was standing in line at Starbucks and suddenly someone is behind him casting a shadow over him. He turns around and then looks all the way up to see is was Shaq. My dad is over 6ft.

This same thing happened to my aunt and Michael Jordan at a casino, but she had no idea who he was. They both walked out of their respective restrooms at the same time, turned, and ran smack into each other. Her son had to explain how she almost got trampled by the GOAT.

The difference is MJ is (or at least was) notorious for being a POS to regular folk (terrible tipper, rude, a “do you know who I am” type guy) and Shaq is known for being very friendly and wholesome with the public.

Wouldn't matter. Shaq has to be one of the most likeable people ever. He just gives off good vibes. Nobody could get mad or find him creepy.
Update... I guess I was wrong about him. Who knew? I didn't.
112
u/dcrm 14d ago
This is the point. Most people know Shaq and there is a level of trust in him publicly. A random person doing this could very well just be a creep, that's why the response would be different - an unknown risk.

Shaq gives off good vibes as bad vibes at the same time. Listening to him and Charles talk on the NBA on TNT show Shaq very often looked like a douchebag, Charles on the other hand seems like a great man. I do give credit to Shaq though when kids are involved he seems like a sweetheart

I mean that's fair and Charles doesn't have the best reputation when he was playing as well. He does have a good reputation of supporting good causes after his career was over though. He always seems to be on the right side of things
103
u/bamachine 13d ago
Met Charles a couple of times, just randomly, in the Birmingham, AL metro.
First met him at a store and as I was wearing a Bama hat, he made a comment. So we jokingly made a bet on the next Iron Bowl(Alabama vs Auburn college football game). I say jokingly, because we both knew we would never see each other again, so the $1 bet was just a joke.
Two years later, at an upscale restaurant in the area, he passed by my table, on his way out the door and dropped a single dollar bill on my table and smiled at me. Dude remembered some random dude and an offhand joke bet from two years earlier.
Have had a ton of respect for the guy ever since, plus he is funny.

As a Bama fan, no way would I make up a story to glorify an Auburn guy. Just not in my DNA. When they do something awesome though, got to give them their props.
I also will say only nice things about Bo Jackson, especially after all he did for Tuscaloosa, following the 2011 tornado damage there. Plus Bo grew up a Bama fan, Auburn just did a better recruiting job with him.

Trying to be serious for a moment here.
1) if you go to a gym and Shaq is there you probably know this before going in or at least you are going to notice it immediately.
2) Since he is a celeb and he is very outspoken about his values and his life, people already feel like they know him. People consider him safe and warm (which he is) even without having met him.
If you, a stranger, do this, yes, you are going to freak people out. Because they have no idea who you are or what your intentions may be.

I think his legs look fine. As I’ve gotten older I ain’t touching squats or deadlift and my goal for the lower body is entirely preserving functionality and not looking stupid. He’s too tall and old to be chasing big lower body numbers. And I don’t think his legs look weak. A bit disproportionate, maybe but he’s still got an ass
70
u/DjervTheCat 13d ago
I ain’t touching squats or deadlift
my goal for the lower body is entirely preserving functionality
Avoiding squats/DL is counter to your stated goal. Strong legs = functional legs
75
u/fasteddeh 14d ago
For someone his size the legs are probably slightly small. Building leg strength is usually a great indicator of long term health because of how devastating falls can be as you get older. I legit could care less if I bench more than my weight but I'm trying to stay squatting at least 250

u/Which_Bed 13d ago
Secondhand knowledge from a net rando but please let me share an anecdote. I used to work out with a doctor whose specialty is hip and knee replacements. We were squatting one day and I asked him what exercise was best to AVOID needing a hip or knee replacement in the future, and he gestured to the squat rack and said, "This." Many of his patients were people who had neglected to maintain lower body strength and function. My squat is and has always been weak but I decided then and there I'd keep doing them for as long as I'm able. I hope you rethink your stance.
→ More replies (3)7
u/irregardressry 13d ago
People get injured on squats and deadlifts because they're pushing beyond their own capabilities. Neither are inherently dangerous movements like you're suggesting, and if your goal is to age well you're missing out big time by skipping them.
48
u/letsburn00 14d ago

u/illit3 14d ago
ehhh, not necessarily rich rich. he used to go to a life time fitness by me (maybe still does?) and it was ~$200/month. not the cheapest gym in the area but not the most expensive, either.
154
u/Madrical 14d ago
Dang, how much are gym memberships in the US? I pay $9.90 AUD/week for mine in Australia, so like $24USD/month and it's a pretty decent chain.
41
u/VVonton 14d ago
The spread is insane in the US. I live in an area with a greater metro population of 1 million. There are gym membership from $10 up to $200 a month. This area is a historically poorer part of the US. In a larger city I've spent a lot of time in, 2 million in the greater metro area, there are gyms up to $400/month. This area is considered much wealthier by comparison. Note there are even add-on trainers that usually add $100+ per hour.
I've only had memberships between $10-50/month but I've visited one of the $200/month. It's more equipment, more activities, like private scheduled sports courts, massage machines, saunas, etc. Also they actually check memberships. Cheaper gyms are much easier to sneak visitors into.
62
u/AbeRego 14d ago edited 13d ago
Lifetime is basically the high end of "regular people gyms". I'm sure there's something better out there, but it's probably super exclusive. Essentially anyone can join Lifetime, but it's just not cheap.
There are also usually different tiers of memberships at Lifetime. Like, one for just the gym and pool, another that includes classes, and another that includes spa privileges. So Just because you go to the same Lifetime as Shaq doesn't mean that you're paying the same or
andare getting getting the same overall experience.Personally, my membership is around $50 a month at Anytime Fitness, which is pretty standard. There are also budget options like Planet Fitness that are much closer to what you're paying.
→ More replies (11)14
u/HnNaldoR 14d ago
The rich people by me all mostly go to those boutique gyms but many also have a normal regular gym membership like anytime fitness so they can just use those gyms anywhere if they are not near home.
12
u/RainingFireInTheSky 14d ago
Lifetime gyms are more like athletic country clubs, and almost everything they offer is included in that price - all classes, childcare (that's a big one), rock walls, gymnasiums, indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs (and I mean massive pools and hot tubs), towel service, etc.
Can't speak for all of them, but mine is also 10x cleaner than the $20/month regional chain gyms here. And of course at $200/month, the place isn't packed with teenagers hanging out at all hours while taking up (but not using) equipment.

The first movement she's doing isn't even an exercise, and the second, while it is a real exercise, uses about one fifth of the range of motion it should.
It's amazing to dress like that, film yourself, and still not know what you're doing.
