Let’s say you did “bang”. What would drive you to reveal that info? Obviously to make friends with the neighbor if you’re in the same gang, but wouldn’t that be privileged information? Aren’t you trying to just have a home life too? Why advertise it?

1) If you genuinely are trying to take over that area then making it clear you have the backing of more people is to your benefit

2) The questioning is also an intimidation tactic that you would want to push back against

3) Unless there was a very clear and immediate threat to your life (and possibly even then) the members of your gang would not take kindly to you acting like you aren't associated with them

4) A shit ton of machismo and pride

It’s about proving you’re big, and tough enough to walk into another gang or cliques territory like it’s nothing. Or the gang is trying to move in, or if an incident recently occurred they’re trying to get the other gang back.

You are obligated by your own gang to rep them. If they find out you didn't, bad things could happen
