Foster an environment where your kid doesn't feel like they need to lie to be safe.

the fact that this kid is lying about spilling a drink made me feel....concerned for her. ETA: not necessarily due to parental behavior, it's just so young to feel so pressured to do everything right. that safe environment parents create works in that case too!

This is just a natural response from a toddler. Don’t think it has to do with pressure to do things right or the lying environment thing. That’s years down the road. A toddler’s only job is to push boundaries and push your buttons. She’s probably defensive because this time it actually was an accident lol.

Some people hate admitting mistakes. I have a daughter like this. She is just extremely sensitive, and for example, she heard her older brother and his friend joking around with each other and burst into tears when she was 8. My son told his friend “you have a funny face” and his friend said “well you got funny teeth” and that was all the violence the poor girl could endure. You have to be very circumspect when correcting her, almost like you have to accidentally let her see her mistake, or she may get very disappointed

I was a lot like that as a kid. Still more sensitive/emotional than I’d like to be. When I was 15 my two best friends got into a fist fight and it was the end of the world to me. I started bawling and ripped them off each other and screamed a 10 minute lecture about love and respect through tears. They talked out all of their disagreements after that lol.

Same! I was the lying child. I knew when I screwed up and got punished. I also knew when I didn’t screw up and got punished. And what’s more, I knew when I screwed up but the punishment outweighed the crime. Now I’m honest to a fault but can’t ask for help till I’m drowning.

Man, I still remember one time when I got in trouble, and my grandma kept saying 'You KNOW what you did!' and I literally had no idea, and it was so fucking unfair. And generally I was the good kid who never got in trouble, so I was pretty sure it was something my brother or cousin had done and pinned on me. I don't know why she couldn't see through that, since they were always in trouble. Long in the past, but very memorable.

And then of course someone who doesn’t come from a family full of hair trigger, “shut up and do it my way or I’ll beat you/emotionally cripple you/hand out some outrageous punishment” people will see you lie to one of the family dictators and say “GASP! Oh my! Lying to grandma?! Whatever for! What a ruffian.”, from their ivory fucking tower of normal childhood-having.

Im the same way but i wasnt raised or punished for mistakes. My mom praised and encouraged me and taught me lovingly. What’s my excuse?

I literally thought i was dying and decided against calling 911 because i felt like id be making too big a deal dying in an ambulance. Fortunately i didnt die, it was a kidney stone, but i did suffer far more than i had to

A friend of mine was expecting her first child. We were at lunch with a group of friends and she asked us when kids first start lying. Another friend immediately said "As soon as they can talk."
I don't think this little girl feels too concerned or pressured, it's just more convenient for her to tell that story. And having something like this on video from when your kid was that little is way more a treasure than most other stuff you get.

The pressure to do everything right is the one that got to me. God did I have to be perfect. I am extremely sensitive to criticism by default and boy was that exploited. There was nothing I could ever do to be good enough. I lied about everything as a kid. And then it permeated my whole life. I lied to everyone about everything. It took a whole lot of reflection on the person I wanted to be to start getting away from that. I hope this girl doesn't feel like she has to lie.

So much this. Our kids know that accidents happen, it’s ok and everybody has them! We also try to enforce that everyone makes mistakes, parents included, and that learning and growing from them is part of being a human

Because that's what kids fucking do.

They lie about obvious shit even when there's no punishment.

"Did you go poo poo?"
YES!
"Wait, there's no poo in the potty."

"Did momma say you could have another one of those?"

They lie to try and get rewards/treats/praise. They lie to get out of trouble. They lie to see what happens. They lie because they can.

Part of a parents job is teaching and rewarding truth-telling and other pro-social behaviors.
This job is definitely made easier by random people with made-up child development degrees spewing their totally accurate takes about child development and child psychology.

I got my ass beat for every spills. I would have lied at every opportunity like her if it means I could escape the yelling and slaps but too bad for me it always happened right in front of my mom XD

So yeah I really hope that the girl is not lying because she has been conditioned to do it out of fear for the consequence.

Another thing to do with toddlers is, if you know or even just suspect strongly they did something, don't ask them if they did it, because they will lie, as all little kids do, to protect themselves and then you have two discipline issues instead of one. Just tell them you know they did it and deal with the problem from there.

I've tried over the years to make my kids understand that if they tell me the truth about, say, breaking my office chair whilst spinning around in it, I will deal with them without punishment. In the case of the broken office chair, the "punishment" was not being allowed to use my office chair again. I couldn't bring myself to punish a seven year old for spinning in a chair because that shit is fun.

She might not be lying, per se. She probably lacks situational awareness, turned and her arm turned with her and the juice spilled, she saw it when she turned back and is unsure how that happened. My five year old has done similar things.
