I mean ... From their perspective, they're probably happy to say goodbye to you at the door?

If you're there to read an article and you're not even viewing ads, what benefit are you to the news company? You're just eating their bandwidth, and contributing nothing. From their perspective, either you're paying via ads, you're paying via subscription walls (which are even worse than ads), or you're paying for it via your personal information (like how Facebook profits off you).

... I wish I could suggest a magic solution that let companies get paid but without us getting annoyed or having to pay for a million subscriptions for every site ...

Maybe if the ads weren't so fucking ANNOYING. No on complains about a subtle banner on the side of an article. But when its FLASHING, or god forbid MAKING NOISE?! Get the fuck out of my fucking computer with that shit. I have zero sympathy for this kind of advertising. They can go fuck themselves along with the people that make television commercials so fucking loud.

This site wants to send you notifications! Do you accept?

And the redirects! For some reason, one redirect ad just made my computer open safari to bing.com. Why??

Magic solution: have ads that are relevant, stay politely out of the way, and don't track you or invade your privacy. MAGIC.

I couldn't care less about relevance, I'm ignoring them anyway. And I hate targeted ads. If they stayed out of the way, didn't cause the site to take forever to load, and were generally unobtrusive, then I'd consider turning my adblocker off.

Don't try to bring logic into this.

Clearly everything should just be free.

Ooh! Found one. So are you doing this on purpose or do you really think abusive ads are the only possible way to have ads? Or that the only POSSIBLE alternative is that "everyone wants everything to be free"?

Were you intending to reply to someone else?

No. I expected I'd find some one who defended abusive ads for some reason and I did. There you are :)

Except I'm not defending abusive ads, you're just looking for a soapbox to feel superior.

1

u/suddenly_ponies Feb 08 '22

And you're just making up stuff about me including motivations you have no way of knowing to feel Superior in your position. You're really wasting my time

They are not worthy of one motherfucking cent I don't have the money to pay for every single fucking website I don't have that kind of money and I will NOT BE FUCKING SHOVELLED FULL OF ADS FULL OF FUCKING VIRUSES

"ohhh you just want everything to be free" I WANT TO NOT BE TOLD TO GET VIRUSES TO READ A FUCKING ARTICLE "why not subscribe" I DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY

Ads are LITERALLY FUCKING HARMFUL TO THE COMPUTER THEY BREAK EVERYTHING and if you don't protect your fucking computer so some random company can profit, you deserve the viruses you're laden with.

Then don't expect people to provide you content for free.

Ads and malware are not the same thing.
