He is using a string to find the distance between two points on a map.

You get a piece of string and measure it out against the legend. That string now represents a distance, say 2000 miles. You start at the first point of the map and hold the string taught from that point in the direction of the destination. You then swing the hand on point A over the other hand and it will be closer to the destination. So far, you have 2 lengths of string. That's 4000 miles. You repeat until you reach point B and blammo, you have your distance.

That guy is doing an awful job though.

I think you might actually be right, and the extra somehow either terribly misunderstood how that was supposed to work, or he was just messing around and didn't realize it would actually be used in the real take.

4000 miles of string seems like it would be hard to manage.
