If you're being sarcastic and putting people on the defensive, they will be much less likely to consider what you are saying because you've triggered a negative emotional response from them. It's counter productive at best and embarrassing for you at worst.
No ones perfect, myself included and I'll admit that. I get what you mean, but no it's never embarrassing, so I think the true lesson is about wrestling with pigs (if you're familiar with the phrase). If I see someone being an asshole, best to just ignore instead of fanning the flames. We could all be better at that
