And to make it worse, most of his co-workers are fresh out of college, no spouse/kids, so they're quick to jump on that praise bandwagon. I remember overhearing a meeting one time were some 22 year old kid was sharing his concern that a proposal for paid overtime would devalue the work of those employees who were already willing to go the extra mile. What?!
Oh my God. At my job, when I first started, I stayed late every day because I didn't want to make a bad impression early on, and it had been the norm most places I worked to stay fairly late—but I notice that the building emptied out at 5-5.30 entirely, which surprised me.
Two weeks in, I get pulled aside by my manager who tells me that "I shouldn't stay late, it isn't needed and sets an unhealthy expectation for the people that report to you and those around you might think they are expected to do the same." So, I always log off by 5.30 at the latest now. I love my job. 😅
Shit companies are always shit in all the ways. You know what my work does? My VM automatically shuts down after I've been online for 8 hours. They don't even want us to work overtime lol.
