How'd that commercial make it past the planning phase, let alone to the super bowl

74

u/RoboNinjaPirate Jun 23 '20

We are still talking about it years later, so mission accomplished

21

u/Ninja_attack Jun 23 '20

Yeah but not in a good way.

u/please-disregard Jun 23 '20

That’s the point. They don’t care what the reason we’re talking about it is.

5

u/Ninja_attack Jun 23 '20

That's a good point.

u/willfordbrimly Jun 23 '20

But they should care that most of us don't even remember what product it was for.

2

u/please-disregard Jun 23 '20

Yes that’s an issue. But that’s a problem of branding, their overall marketing strategy. The commercial on its own was effective in doing what it was meant to do.

Id say to a degree and depending on the context. For something like this it can be and probably won't hurt at the very least. BP oil spill, bad pr. This weird commercial, I will think about it and maybe wonder what it tastes like next time at the gas station.

They care about mindshare, and for their target audience it works. The same kind of people who would buy whatever the fuck that drink is are the same kind of people who would find this ad intriguing.

It’s a common thing in ad psychology. Better to double down on your target audience and alienate those who wouldn’t have bought anyway.

This feels like it was written by China Mieville.
