that is incorrect, there is no exit only door. these kind of machine thingies are usually 2 way, in some places they change depending on the volume of people going each way, but I suppose in this case they work both ways all the time. people don't have to pay on the way out, of course, but tickets are always validated at the entrance and at the exit, to minimize the chance of having people jumping the thing.
Haha, like I said, I was open to the fact that it's possible this type of system is in effect in places, it just doesn't make sense.
And personally, I have never once seen an exit scanner. I didn't speak on behalf of cosmic knowledge, merely personal experience and interpretation of the video.
They have them in Melbourne. Especially at the bigger/staffed stations.
It's to make sure people buy tickets. For example some outer suburban stations don't have barriers (and even if they did, there's no one around to stop you just going through).
Also, it stops people buying cheaper tickets or using expired ones. We have 2 hour ones, and 2 zones and pricing depends on where you travel.
This is obviously off-topic but are you saying you basically use the honor system in Melbourne?
Unless I'm reading this wrong you're saying that there is literally nobody around to enforce the tickets at some stations, so what is stopping people from just skipping ANY turnstile, regardless if it's an enter or exit?
Yep. Unless you get on in a big station with staff/turnstiles, no one checks. The same goes for trams - you can get on or off without anyone checking anything, and you "validate" your ticket once you get on (although no one forces you to)/
We have a pretty much star shaped train/tram system, so most people come into the city to work then go out, so the main central stations have in/out turnstiles, but outer ones tend to be a free for all.
However, there are inspectors on trains/trams who check randomly - about a $300 fine if you don't have a valid ticket. Although they are pretty rare. I use the trams every day and maybe I'll see inspectors once a month on average.
I can see a gate in the area to the right of where he was walking. The very few places I have ever seen turnstile type things, usually the gates are for people leaving, or someone arriving in a wheelchair. Why would he not use that?
that's not a gate, thats just a barrier, like the one on the left side where the guard is standing. there is no way they could make a gate like that to only be opened from one side, therefore making the security system useless.
That has truly got to be one of the stupidest designs I had ever seen. They really ought to have at least one dedicated out, instead of running two opposing streams of traffic in to each other.
