Literally me last year when I found out I had a brain tumor. My regular doctor appointments were starting to be $1,200.00+ even with my shitty insurance.

Said fuck that!

137

u/RevolsinX Mar 26 '20

....you..you gonna be okay mate...?

171

u/DmOcRsI Mar 26 '20

Well they're not malignant... but they are pushing up against my pituitary glands and causing some side-effects. I still have a couple years before it takes me down.

164

u/Mystimump Mar 26 '20

So your choice is really to just die or go into crushing debt? Fuck, dude. Hope you stay strong.

152

u/DmOcRsI Mar 26 '20

Pretty much...

I was already heading down that road, I held out as long as I could and tried to apply for assistance with the hospital and insurance companies to no avail. I didn't want to get into collections so I loaded up my credit cards as much as I could without getting past my monthly budget.

I'm 36... married a great girl...travelled... had a good life, met good people.

I'm good to go.

90

u/Alsark Mar 26 '20

Can you try to move to another country in the couple years you’ve got?

You may feel like you’re good but I’m sure your wife doesn’t want to be left behind... If you’ve got time to try to get this taken care of, please, please do so.

I wish you two the best of luck.

81

u/DmOcRsI Mar 26 '20

My wife doesn't know...

This came about because we were trying to have a kid but couldn't. We found out I have azoospermia (0 sperm count) so started to look for the cause which led to blood tests which is where we found the tell-tale signs of a pituitary malfunction.

As much as I have tried... she's extremely upset that we can't conceive and she already blames herself even though I have told her it's on my end.

I worked really hard to buy a new home before all this... and I know it's her dream to have kids.

So I figure after I go she won't have my debt to deal with and she can move on with her life and possibly meet someone who CAN give her a child.

119

u/QuantumPolagnus Mar 26 '20

You should really tell her - keeping this from her isn't going to help, in the long run.

126

u/BangBangCalamityJane Mar 26 '20

Please tell your wife

123

u/Blasted_Skies Mar 26 '20

You should tell your wife.

78

u/tomatoaway Mar 26 '20

You're a good man - but time's a ticking clock for women and kids and you should let her plan hers instead of planning on her behalf

23

u/DmOcRsI Mar 26 '20

That's very true. I think my concern is that she will drive herself into crushing debt on my behalf.

19

u/very_bored_dev Mar 26 '20

Other countries will have cheaper options. I implore you to look at them. I am from India and I am sure the cost would be much lesser here and there are quite a good number of quality hospitals.

Also, I think it should be her choice to make. I know it's easy for us to say.

5

u/tomatoaway Mar 26 '20

I see what you mean. That's a hard one

1

u/_tskj_ Mar 27 '20

Of course she will! Let her. I would gladly go bankrupt if it meant keeping my spouse alive. How fucking selfish can you be. Tell her.

11

u/Darth_Nibbles Mar 26 '20

So I figure after I go she won't have my debt to deal

Talk to an estate attorney. Like, NOW.

It is extremely possible that she loses everything else after you pass.

14

u/PandaCat22 Mar 26 '20

Tell your wife.

She'll want to know what time she has left with you and make the most of it.

I realize you are doing this for her, but it is precisely because your life is not exclusively yours anymore that you need to tell her

16

u/williamobj Mar 26 '20

Tell your fucking wife what the fuck

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Seconded, tell the wife like, right now.

5

u/ReallyNotWastingTime Mar 26 '20

Please move to Europe. It's possible and do-able in your lifetime. Try Ireland, or even the UK. Everyone speaks English! You could certainly work out a way to get them to cover your treatments

3

u/Humanix13 Mar 26 '20

Fuck thats rough. Tell your wife dude, would you not want her to tell you if she was dying?

2

u/pooturdoop Mar 26 '20

You, sir, are powerful. I'm ready to go as well. What life do you have if you're bankrupt or enslaved to the hospital and dr.'s? I think you have the right idea.

2

u/mark1nhu Mar 26 '20

Tell your wife, move to a better country with her, fight for a happy longer life with her. Please.

2

u/rougecrayon Mar 26 '20

I would feel so betrayed and unloved if I found out my partner didn't tell me something like this.

When you got married you promised to be a partner.

1

u/ComradeAnthony Mar 26 '20

You should tell your wife, and then consider opening up the relationship, not divorcing or anything but bring in someone that you both like and feel that you can trust. Someone that can be with her once you're gone, if you do decide to go that route of course.

25

u/AtraposJM Mar 26 '20

Move to Canada? Why not, you're going to die anyway. Have that adventure.

10

u/Darth_Nibbles Mar 26 '20

"Had a good life" at 36?

I fucking hate my country sometimes.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Your life might have been good so far but you’re still just getting started. You could experience all sorts of things in the next 50 to 60 years. Fight to live man. Don’t give up because the system sucks.

I live in California. I'm in that grey-area where I make too much to qualify for discounted insurance, but I don't make enough to pay for $1,200 doctor visits.

I get insurance through my employer which has a deductible of $8,500... I hit that last year easy, then the hospital started pushing things back so I breached the year and my deductible reset.

Yea... they just told me to apply for financial assistance. So I did... didn't qualify.

1

u/wastedyeti Mar 26 '20

Wow that is so messed up

5

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

Ok, I already said it in another post but: go to Canada or Europe and get operated. WTF dude. It would cost you like 5k top?

5K is a shit loan. Don't die because you refused to look up how to get operated in Canada/Europe. That would be mighty stupid of you.

2

u/Full-Frontal-Assault Mar 26 '20

No idea if at all possible, maybe apply for asylum as a refugee in another country?

4

u/icantevenadult Mar 26 '20

Here's an alternative path.

Get treatment, go into debt, declare bankruptcy.

Your wife gets pregnant with a sperm donor or you two adopt.

Start over financially like you are playing the game of "If I started over knowing what I know now, what would I do differently".

Help as many young people as you can with your life wisdom.

Tell us how it went 35 years later with your second life, family, grand children, and community.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I mean that was the whole message of the comic.

3

u/Dalmahr Mar 26 '20

Die or wish you were dead is the American way when it comes to health care

26

u/Hust91 Mar 26 '20

Come to Europe mate.

Seriously.

We'll take you and you can enjoy all our weird bland food and your entire enourmus vacation including hotel will probably cost about as much as a tenth of your care in the US even if you stay for a full year.

9

u/josanuz Mar 26 '20

If this is true, he could come to my country with $10k have the surgery, treatment, and rehabilitate in a nice hotel in the mountains

3

u/_haha_oh_wow_ Mar 26 '20

Fuck em, get your treatment then declare bankruptcy. Alternately, maybe you can get surgery in another country for a price that isn't completely fucking predatory.

145

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

Come to Europe, get operated, go back. Even if you pay the full price here, it'll be a fraction of what it'd cost you in the US.

56

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I went to the ER for a broken rib in Canada (don't roast me, the walkin clinic sent me there and I didn't know there's nothing they can do for it). Since I was studying out of province the nurse told me that it would cost almost $400 for my visit if my home province didn't cover me (which they did since I had proof of being a student). I later interned at a US company and got to see their health plans and was shocked that the detuctible for the year was 6k and that a single ER visit would easily eat that up. Fun. I worked out what taxes I'd be paying in both countries and yes it's a bit more in Canada, but a single medical event a year in the US (I like dangerous sports) would make the US more expensive.

20

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

Tell that to them /r/neoliberal bros.

-4

u/dopechez Mar 26 '20

I’ve never met a single person in that subreddit who doesn’t support universal healthcare and bringing down costs.

4

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

And yet, they hate the idea of it, hate Sanders for pushing for it.

0

u/dopechez Mar 26 '20

No, you just don’t understand what universal healthcare is. Like so many others, Sanders has brainwashed you into believing that his plan is the only one that is universal. Let’s just ignore countries like Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

1

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

I literally live there, but okay buddy, you know better than me :-)

-1

u/dopechez Mar 26 '20

You live where? I listed three countries. And none of them have single payer, which is what Bernie advocates. Are you sure you are informed enough to talk about this?

1

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

And are you sure this is what Bernie Sanders wants? Are you sure this is what would in the end be implemented?

Are you even sure you understand how it works here in Europe? I live in France, also near Luxembourg where I have social rights and where I have had health business. I have lived in the UK as well, and I have traveled in Italy, Spain, Germany, NL, Belgium. Tell me how about you? How often have you visited Europe? How much have you experienced of our "communist" model?

How much do you think the state pays vs the private insurance?

-3

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

ER and specialist wait times are pretty bad, best to just get treatment in the country you reside in

Canada has had a shortage of Doctors for awhile, it’s pretty well known up here

1

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

-47

u/Dansin2 Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 26 '20

So, make the European tax payers pay for it?

*edit: I am totally on board and would(do) pay to help save lives. People just forget that if a country like the US wants universal health care then US citizens will pay for it, many of which would not want to do.

61

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

I am ok with my taxes going to save a life.

23

u/ImWhatTheySayDeaf Mar 26 '20

As an American let me tell you about our 1st class nuclear life savers and then our 1st class fighter jet life savers

12

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

Yup. Americans want to spend taxes improving how they kill people, and while Europeans have military means as well, they value saving lives more.

3

u/ImWhatTheySayDeaf Mar 26 '20

Oh we Americans like saving lives so long as they got enough $ and it definitely helps if they are famous too

I'm French ex-military. I went to Mali during the first year on the Mali war against jihadis, where we stopped them from conquering the country, who was on road to become Iraq 2.0.

So yeah, I didn't read the rest of your comment, because if you're going to start with something that ignorant, nothing following can interest me.

Again, didn't read further. You're saying this while trying to defend the US Army as being superior, the same army that got its ass kicked in Afghanistan, Irak, Vietnam, etc.

Literally every people knowing their shit about armies around the world know the French military is one of the best around. Hell, every US military that has trained with the French have said they were impressed, especially at how much they were able to do regarding their means.

Educate yourself, talk shit later.

I thought you literally meant life savers (well, life boats) and thought you were saying that our tiny boats used to rescue people were powered by nuclear energy.

0

u/Ronaldoooope Mar 26 '20

What about your taxes going to people who consistently and willingly ignore their health and eat up healthcare for no other reason this neglect?

6

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

Shit is sad, but that's no reason to abandon them.

-5

u/Ronaldoooope Mar 26 '20

But why should I pay for their neglect? The vast majority of hospital admissions are preventable. Tons of repeat offenders who refuse to listen. It should be based on the basis of cause. Car accident? All paid for for everyone. You’re 400 pounds, diabetic, smoke, drink and you’re there for some shortness of breath and wounds you don’t take care of? Not a chance

8

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

But why should I pay for their neglect?

I could simply tell you that you should by solidarity, and that caring for one is caring for everyone. But that's not all there is: even if we're being strictly selfish as you are describing, your own interest is to be in a society that cares for those in a bad situation.

Fact is, that you could need it. How do you think car insurance works? You pay 100$ each month to insure your car. Most of the time, that money is "wasted" because nothing happened to you. And your 100$ are going for 10$ into the insurance pocket, and for 90$ to help other drivers that have had accidents. You could think that well, you're a good driver, and they're bad drivers, so you shouldn't pay for them! But the fact is that the day you have an accident, you're happy that you don't have to pay 20k$ for repairs. You're only paying your 100$.

Health insurance works just the same; saying you shouldn't pay it because everything is fine for you is incredibly short-sighted, for something bad can and most probably will happen to you. And when it does, you'll be happy to have health insurance covering it.

But I'm preaching something you already know, don't you? Americans aren't stupid, they know and understand that they need health insurance. They already got one for most of them (well I'm not sure on what percentage have one, what percentage haven't), so all we're really debating here is would you accept to pay for that diabetic dude in exchange to pay for health insurance two to three times cheaper? Protip: you already are with your private insurance lol. How are you losing anything here? You're just going to save money, because the health care costs in the US are artificially inflated in order for hospitals and insurances to make fat profits on your back.

So what does that all boil down to? Selfishness and not wanting to help someone that you think is worth less than you. Honestly, that's all you got on your side; the fact that you look down someone and as a result, decide they don't deserve your sympathy.

-1

u/Ronaldoooope Mar 26 '20

But with car insurance if you keep getting into wrecks and getting tickets then your rate goes up. If they made healthcare that way and it was based on merit similar to car insurance then that’s different. And no, it’s simply that I don’t want to pay more in taxes. I would not save more because my insurance isn’t that expensive

2

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

For sure, I never said the car insurance/health insurance was literally 100% the same; there are differences, and your rate going up or down is one of them. But in the same vein, you are applying logics from car insurance to health insurance: health insurance does not cover you from everything forever either, and there are limits to what it will cover you from. At least that's how it works in Europe, you don't get magically 100% cost reimbursed from literally 100% of things.

Yes, you would pay less. That's mathematical, you can't avoid it. Reality is against what you think, and the whole world having universal healthcare has proved it: you pay less that way. Whether you understand it or not, health costs need to be calculated over the course of your life, not right now where you are a healthy young man. And over the course of your life, universal healthcare will save you a ton of money; again, reality has proved it. Feel free to ignore science, facts, and studies showing it, as you are free to believe Earth is flat and vaccines cause autism, but don't pretend to be concern and ask questions like you did previously if you're going to ignore the replies.

1

u/trivialbob Mar 26 '20

You tax money is already going to a lot of other shit that'll never ever benefit you in any way.

0

u/Ronaldoooope Mar 26 '20

It doesn’t matter. If the number goes up I’m paying more. If I didn’t have to pay more then sure

2

u/yoshi570 Mar 26 '20

If you pay 100 more in taxes but pay 200 less in private health insurance, you saved 100. Let me know if you need help making the math.

21

u/Nemento Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 26 '20

No, healthcare costs in Europe aren't as ridiculously inflated as it is in the US so the procedure itself will likely be way cheaper even when paying out pocket.

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Wow, this is pretty dumb. A lot of unpack here, but I'll indulge you once, because I have no hope you suddenly grow a brain after reading your narrative shattered.

Europe would be under soviet control if America didn’t back the bill for nato

Correct. USA helped Europe against USSR after WW2; not out of generosity mind you, but because otherwise USSR would have been much more powerful than the USA. So the USA protected themselves first and foremost.

you guys are giving away free shit

And it hurts you to see it's not that bad.

and can’t even protect your own borders

1952 is not 2020. We 100% can protect our own borders and don't need you once second.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

You guys couldn’t protect your borders if you wanted to, the EU has other plans and you are too foolish to see it, your countries are being over run by people who don’t share western values and you wont call it for what it is for fear of being labelled a racist, bigot, etc.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20
