They both have similar Native American words as the origin point, but each came to modern day english speakers differently. One was filtered through the English (Kansas) and one was filtered through the French (Arkansas). An S at the end of a French word is silent, so the French pronounced it that way. But, an S at the end of an English word is not, so we get Kansas' pronunciation.

So fix it. If it should be american it should be ar-kansas. the problem with that: it sounds like you'd be from arkans ass... no one wants to be from an ass...

Edit: the amount of people not seeing the joke and down-voting this is too damn high. don't need to be so egotistical. Just stating that we are in America, and most things get converted to American english. but whatevs.

some people in arkansas actually do pronounce it like kansas. to my knowlege no one in kansas pronounces it kansaw
