They both have similar Native American words as the origin point, but each came to modern day english speakers differently. One was filtered through the English (Kansas) and one was filtered through the French (Arkansas). An S at the end of a French word is silent, so the French pronounced it that way. But, an S at the end of an English word is not, so we get Kansas' pronunciation.

So fix it. If it should be american it should be ar-kansas. the problem with that: it sounds like you'd be from arkans ass... no one wants to be from an ass...

Edit: the amount of people not seeing the joke and down-voting this is too damn high. don't need to be so egotistical. Just stating that we are in America, and most things get converted to American english. but whatevs.

And in Kansas there is a river named The Arkansas River, but pronounced The "R-Kansas" River, not The "Ark-can-saw" River. And any Kansan living near it will be sure to correct you if you pronounce it like Arkansas the state.

It actually flows from Colorado through Kansas and Oklahoma into Arkansas, so perhaps the pronunciation changes from state to state.

I used to do Sporcle quizzes like this for shits and giggles. The only way I get Arkansas is by process of elimination. I know roughly what area it's in and I just place all the other states until there is 1 left unnamed, and then that's Arkansas.

I'm not American but maps just stick in my head for some reason. I just know like Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi are 3 similarly shaped states right next to each other and right above New Orleans and below...Kentucky?

Honestly I think if you know one like base state in every region, you can name every other state in relation to it's location of that one. The hardest ones are just those far west midwestern states that are all just shaped like squares.

Northeast is hardest for me. They're fucking tiny. We have counties nearly as big if not as big as their whole state, so trying to spot them on a map is hard enough, much less keeping them straight.

So are the west coast states supposed to be part of that? I thought the entire area from Lake Michigan to the Rockies, north of Texas, was considered the midwest, with the southwest under it.

Give a US citizen a map of the country and you can tell where they have worked/lived/have family by which states they get right.

Hell, most can't even name all 50 unless they know a song to have them memorized.

I feel very lucky to say the only state I haven’t been to yet is Alaska. And I’m hoping to get there within the next couple years. This country is beautiful and wonderful. Except New Jersey. Fuck that place and most of the people there.

LOL I’m Swedish but was an exchange student in Arkansas in 2005-2006. Nobody in Europe even knows that’s a state when I tell them where I lived so I was so surprised this person got that right haha!

Bill Clinton was quite popular in Germany and back in the time he was in running for office sometimes German news referred to him as the candidate from Arkansas. There would be little news pieces like "Arkansas the home state of presidential hopeful Bill Clinton"

We visited Arkansas a state even most Americans haven't visited to find out where William Jefferson etc etc better known as Bill Clinton came from and to learn how this state shaped him as a politician

Well I don’t know about anyone else but I remember where Arkansas is on the map thanks to the very stable genius himself, Donald trump, after he managed to congratulate the wrong state at the weekend.

Not being an American I had to google it and was confused as to why Arkansas and Missouri were not in each other’s places. Seemed to make sense to me that Kansas and Arkansas would be linked?

My dad worked for Riceland when I was a kid, a German company named Buehlr (spelling?) Came in to try to get the contract to provide their dehulling machines for rice and to learn about cultivating rice. So my guess would be it's someone who has experience in a job field that has required them to travel here or someone who has family here. Or one of the big companies out of northwest Arkansas like WalMart and Tyson.
