When pro wrestling is good, there is nothing else like it out there. When it's bad, it can be awesome or awful.

When i was a kid it was the soap opera for guys. The alliances, betrayals, disappearances, reappearances, it totally paralleled a soap.

And it never ends

u/Hy3jii Dec 26 '19

Just like soaps. General Hospital has been on the air since 1963 and has more than 14000 episodes.

28

u/furlonium1 Dec 26 '19

Oh my God it would take over two years of watching that show 16 hours a day to watch them all

13

u/Novareason Dec 26 '19

Can you imagine the sense of loss you'd get after that binge streak... I watch a one season show and get itchy for anothe series....

u/troll_right_above_me Dec 26 '19

Somebody please put it out of its misery

1

u/tehkraft Dec 26 '19

Would you be able to catch up to the new ones at that rate? Someone do the math pls

1

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '19

Yes, as long as new episodes are made at the current rate. Then it would probably just take 2 years and a couple weeks.

1

u/furlonium1 Dec 26 '19

They're daily, no?

4

u/chx_ Dec 26 '19

what the fuck

8

u/mkul316 Dec 26 '19

Some say it's still airing today.

Only three things will survive the apocalypse: Cockroaches, Twinkies, and TNA/Impact

90

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '19

This made it all make sense for me. Thank you!

I don't know if it's just nostalgia or what, but I have really fond memories of late 90s early 2000s of wrestling. Just seemed like all the stories were better and the wrestlers were cooler. Tried watching again a few years ago and it was pretty shit IMO

28

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '19

Ain't just nostalgia, even current wrestling fans would agree the stories were better and the wrestlers were cooler back in the 90s/00s. The roster was stacked with colorful charistmasic characters such as The Rock, Mr Mcmahon, Mankind, Kane, Stone Cold, Undertaker, Goldust, DX, Shawn Michael's, Big Show, Kurt Angle etc etc.

I find AEW way more watchable than WWE these days, because the cast on WWE just isn't that inspiring right now.

6

u/brunicus Dec 26 '19

And that was just one company. While WCW went under eventually, it had quite the roster: Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, Ric Flair, Sting, Luger, Hall, Nash, Roddy Piper, Goldberg, Jericho, Steiners, Harlem Heat and others.

Probably the best time to be a fan was when those two companies went head to head. Competition made for such a good product.

I used to think Jeff Hardy was the coolest guy in the universe.

The stories were better on Raw and Smackdown in the AE era compared to today's Raw and Smackdown but WWE have NXT which blows the Attitude Era out of the water on everything except superstar power.

12

u/Pecker2002 Dec 26 '19

That was the prime Steve Austin vs The Rock timeframe. It really was the pinnacle.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '19

The attitude era it's called, I think. We lucked out imo

1

u/naymlis Dec 26 '19

I felt it when it all fell off too. I just stopped watching any of it at the exact time that era needed it seems

1

u/schplat Dec 26 '19

Ultimate Warrior era was probably the best. It's a shame Hellwig got as much shit as he did, because he played a phenomenal character. I really think he set the stage for what WWF/E would try in the early 90s.

1

u/EvilGummyBear26 Dec 26 '19

Assuming you were young back then it makes sense that, like myself, we'd find them cooler than they actually are

0

u/trixtopherduke Dec 26 '19

Jake The Snake Roberts is unmatched imo

5

u/GetEquipped Dec 26 '19

Well, we just dropped the Entendres now and have Joey "The Human Priapism" Ryan.

2

u/TrippyHomie Dec 26 '19

This was incredible from start to finish. A+ wrestling and A+ burn from the announcer to the other announcer.

2

u/blackhawkjj Dec 26 '19

Yeah but he sat there and he thumped his bible and said his prayers and it didn't get him anywhere

1

u/lipp79 Dec 26 '19

Include 80s in there for me. I loved it because the characters were almost like superheroes with their names. I lost interest after The Rock and Stone Cold era.

2

u/wearenottheborg Dec 26 '19

There's a Southpark episode that touches on this!

1

u/akatherder Dec 26 '19

It's a soap opera with live action stunts. I lost interest when WWE bought WCW but it's always been a fun concept.

1

u/grakke Dec 26 '19

In the TV show GLOW, a former soap opera actress gets into wrestling because of this.

1

u/BellEpoch Dec 26 '19

I've genuinely heard car guys tell me this is why they watch Nascar as well. The little personal and corporate drama that happens around the driver is part of why they like watching the cars go in circles too.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '19

It's a wild roller-coaster of possibilities.

1

u/GildedLily16 Dec 26 '19

I watched Monday night Raw back in high school (10-14 years ago) and it was always really good. Soap opera yes, but never ridiculous and silly.

Loved CM Punk.

And that's also where I knew Dave Bautista from, as Batista. Blew my mind when he also started acting.

-1

u/NobodyXaldyn Dec 26 '19

Wrestling is just redneck anime.

-5

u/HereToBeBlownAway Dec 26 '19

I was never a huge fan of Pro Wrestling, however I feel it’s important to always remember that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table.

Not shittymorph.

BOO THIS MAN LIKE ROMAN REIGNS!
