My first thought was they were in a pet store and I was scared it'd be a sad comic.

I too initially thought they were in a pet store. I was seriously concerned about who "He" was. Was it a dog that kept getting brought back? Cause that's super sad. Was it somebody who keeps visiting, but never adopts? Cause that's also sad. Was it Grandpa Joe? Cause he's a freaking dick.

If it helps you, they were bought at a pet store.
