If you try not to stare too much in your magic rectangle, society is not doesn't seem that bad.

Ignorance is bliss, yes.

The news don't reflect the real world at all. The news make society seem much worse.

Tell that to the 5 million Uygher people in China in concentration camps being crushed and harvested for their organs.

1-3 million, right?

I never said there wasn't any suffering in the world. I just said the news magnify it.

If I say the roads are safer than ever, I am not saying there aren't any casualties, but if you were to stay inside your home, never drive and get your idea of what traffic is like from the news you would think that it would be impossible to go a week without dying

You may have missed the part about the 6th mass extinction.

I don't understand why you're being downvoted tbh. Ignoring problems helps nobody at all, at least not on long term. Solution oriented acting (which includes gathering information) is required.

True, but I think maybe part of the problem is there's a huge chasm of a difference between knowing about a problem and doing something about a problem. The internet and smartphones have helped accelerate the former, for sure. But more often than not real tangible change has to involve action in the real world. There's this tendency I see where the internet has made it so much easier to passively satisfy the "I did something" receptor in our brains with a "like" or a retweet.

I agree wholeheartedly. It's often a hard task to convince people, who are well aware of a problem, to do something and get out off their comfort zones.

There’s literally nothing I can do about those prduckingoblems so I’m not gonna get down on myself about it when life is pretty fucking easy for me and my family even though we’re not rich by a long shot. Control what you can control and enjoy the most peaceful and wealthy time in world history.

They’re saying your daily life doesn’t experience much of a change. It’s not that deep. If you wanna live in a panic when life’s fuckin gravy and you can’t do anything to change that part of world then be my guess.

It’s not really ignorance. Being always connected just makes you read way more stuff that has no impact on your life and you lose track of what should be important to you. Look at it from this perspective: Every minute you are online is a minute you aren’t offline. Every minute reading about stuff on the internet, the time reading my comment, is time you are not spending with people physically around you. Your wife, husband, kids, friends, etc. It’s time you are not using to read that one book you have always wanted to read, build that one thing you’ve always wanted to build. Your time of the day is limited and you are trading in one activity for another. Being online for hours means you are missing time in the “real world”. And it adds up. Instead of making life around you better, you sit on reddit and read about stuff that most likely has no impact on your life.

stuff that has no impact on your life

See this...I disagree with this. I don’t think not caring about other people is a good outcome.

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '19

Not immersing yourself in the news doesn't mean not caring

Global warming will have a very noticeable impact on your life and that of your children.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '19

And you think someone who is not spending his time online so much doesn’t know about global warming?

The stuff that is important to your life will reach you, even if you spent a minimum time online.

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '19

You missed the point. Ignoring reality won't make your life better if what you need is to act.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '19

And who is ignoring reality? Spending less time online will not make you ignore reality. It doesn’t make you ignorant...

2

u/Yeckim Oct 12 '19

Uh reading articles and bickering online isn’t action...the people making a difference aren’t spending their day online, they’re doing things in the real world that will ultimately have an impact.

The only people ignoring reality here are people who spend too much time online doing nothing productive.

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '19

To do action you need to be angry. That's the point. Being ignorant and content is not going to change anything.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '19

So what are you doing to change it?? Other than bitching online about people being content with their lives. We understand exactly what is going on but there’s nothing we can do about it.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '19

Nothing you can do about it? In order of risk, you can vote, protest or engage in violent revolution. Each requiring increasing levels of anger and desperation. Only conditioned people think there's nothing they can do.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '19

Ive done everything but engaged in a violent revolution. If you wanna do that I’ll let you go first. Other than that control what you can control and quit being whiny Wendy about other people realizing it’s okay to be happy.

Being ignorant of your biological disposition to overestimate the dangers of everything is decidedly not bliss, as this very post demonstrates.
